Elisabeth Valerio
Elisabeth Isabel Valerio is a Zimbabwean businesswoman and politician who is leader of the United Zimbabwe Alliance (UZA). She was the only female candidate for president in the 2023 Zimbabwean general election. Early life and education Elisabeth Valerio was born in Masvingo, Zimbabwe. She grew up in Hwange in Matabeleland North Province. She spent most of her childhood in the mid-1970s in her parents’ grocery store at Machipisa Shopping Center in Highfield. Valerio attended University of California, Los Angeles. Career Valerio is a biochemist and conservationist by profession. She began her career as a biochemist then moved to Hwange, where she became an environmentalist. 2023 Zimbabwean General Election
General elections were held throughout Zimbabwe on 23 and 24 August 2023 to elect the President of Zimbabwe, president, legislators and councillors. The main race for presidential office was between two candidates of Kalanga people, Karanga origin: ZANU–PF's Emmerson Mnangagwa and Citizens Coalition for Change's Nelson Chamisa. The presidential election was won by the incumbent president Mnangagwa, while the governing ZANU–PF party won a majority of seats in parliament, with observer bodies describing the elections as not being free and fair. The voter rolls for the election increased to 6.5 million, up from 5.8 million in 2018. The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission spoke about the delays citing that they would compensate for the delays meaning if the polling station was opened at 11am, it would close at 11pm to ensure that there is 12 hours of voting. Masvingo
Masvingo, known as Fort Victoria during the colonial period, is a city in southeastern Zimbabwe and the capital of Masvingo Province. The city lies close to Great Zimbabwe, the national monument from which the country takes its name and close to Lake Mutirikwi, its recreational park, the Kyle dam and the Kyle National Reserve that is home to a range of animal species. It is mostly populated by the Karanga people who form the biggest branch of the various Shona tribes in Zimbabwe. History The city was known as Fort Victoria until 1982, when its name was briefly changed to Nyanda, after a mountain about 10 kilometres south of the town, on the Masvingo to Beitbridge Road. Hwange, originally known as Wankie, is a town in Zimbabwe, located in Hwange District, in Matabeleland North Province, in northwestern Zimbabwe, close to the international borders with Botswana and Zambia. Matabeleland North Province
Matabeleland North is a province in western Zimbabwe. With a population of 827,645 as of the 2022 census, it is the country's second-least populous province, after Matabeleland South, and the least densely Zimbabwean populated province. Matabeleland North and Matabeleland South were established in 1974, when the original Matabeleland Province was bifurcated, eventually losing territory in 1997 when the city of Bulawayo became a province in its own right.
