Elisabeth Schneider-Schneiter
Elisabeth Schneider-Schneiter (born 19 February 1964 Basel) is a Swiss jurist and politician of The Centre (formerly known as the Christian Democratic People's Party). Political career She has been a member of the parliament of the Canton Basel-Landschaft since 1999, over which she also presided in the term between 2006 and 2007. In November 2010, she replaced the resigning Kathrin Amacker in the National Council. She was also a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE). At the party conference of the CVP Baselland in October 2018, Schneider-Schneiter was nominated as a candidate for the successor of Doris Leuthard in the Federal Council. She would have been the first Federal Councillor from the Basel Landschaft in 123 years. The National Council (; ; ; ) is a house of the Federal Assembly of Switzerland, representing the people. The other house, Council of States, represents the states, preventing more populous parts of the country overpowering the rest. As the powers of the houses are the same, it is sometimes called perfect bicameralism. Both houses meet in the Federal Palace of Switzerland in Bern. The national council comprises 200 persons. Adult citizens elect the council's members, who are called National Councillors, for four year terms. These members are apportioned to the Swiss cantons in proportion to their population. Schwendibach is a former municipality in the administrative district of Thun in the canton of Bern in Switzerland. On 1 January 2020 the former municipality of Schwendibach merged into the municipality of Steffisburg. History Schwendibach is first mentioned in 1388 as ''Swendibach''. The area was gradually settled as small farms cleared the land during the Late Middle Ages. The land was originally owned by the Count of Kyburg. After the defeat of the Austrian backed Kyburgs in the Burgdorferkrieg, in 1384 the Kyburg lands were acquired by the city of Bern. Throughout its history it formed a chapelry with Goldiwil (now a village in Thun) in the parish of Thun. Traditionally the residents farmed, raised dairy cattle, produced cheese or cut timber.
