Elisabeth Jones
Elisabeth Velina Jones is a Welsh lawyer who served as the Counsel General-designate for Wales, from 7 August 2024 to 11 September 2024 and has also served as legal adviser to the Senedd. Early life and education Jones studied French and German at Somerville College, Oxford, and studied for an LLM at the University of Bristol. Career Jones initially worked in commercial and employment law in the City of London and Bristol. She also worked giving free legal advice at the Gloucester Law Centre. She later worked at the European Court of Human Rights. In 2012, she was appointed Chief Legal Advisor to the National Assembly for Wales. She served in this role until 2019. In 2024, she was appointed as Counsel General-desginate in the Eluned Morgan government on "an interim basis". She replaced Vaughan Gething, who had appointed himself to the role after Mick Antoniw resigned from the cabinet. Mick Antoniw ( uk, Мік Антонів; born 1 September 1954) is a Welsh Labour and Co-operative politician, serving as Counsel General for Wales since 2021, and previously from 2016 to 2017. He has been the Member of the Senedd (MS) for Pontypridd since 2011. Early life Antoniw comes from a Ukrainian family, with a Danish mother and came to the UK as a result of his father seeking refugee status in the UK following World War II. Antoniw came to Wales to study law at the Cardiff Law School in 1973. He was President of the National Union of Students Wales from 1977 to 1979. Professional career He was a practising solicitor before his election to the Senedd, specialising in personal injury. The Law Society of England and Wales (officially The Law Society) is the professional association that represents solicitors for the jurisdiction of England and Wales. It provides services and support to practising and training solicitors, as well as serving as a sounding board for law reform. Vaughan Gething (born 15 March 1974) is a Welsh Labour and Co-operative politician serving as Minister for the Economy since 2021. He previously served as the Minister for Health and Social Services from 2016 to 2021. He has been the Member of the Senedd (MS) for Cardiff South and Penarth since 2011. Early life Gething was born in Zambia in 1974, where his father, a White Welsh vet from Ogmore-by-Sea in South Glamorgan, met his mother who is a Black Zambian. Counsel General For Wales
The Counsel General for Wales is the Welsh Government's Law Officer (akin to the role of Attorney general in other jurisdictions using the Common law), which means the government's chief legal adviser and representative in the courts. In addition to these "lawyer" roles the Counsel General also works to uphold the rule of law and integrity of the legal community in Wales, and has a number of important specific statutory functions, some of which are to be exercised independently of government and in the public interest.
