Elisa Marie Thornam
Elisa Marie Thornam (12 March 1857 – 22 April 1901) was a Danish landscape painter and botanical illustrator who contributed to the ''Flora Danica'' and Botanisk Tidsskrift. Life and career Thornam was born in Kongens Lyngby, Denmark. She died on 22 April 1901 in Copenhagen. Her father was the painter and botanical illustrator Johan Christian Thornam (1822–1908), who taught botanical illustration and served as artist on the Galathea Expedition of 1845. ''Flora Danica'' is a comprehensive atlas of botany from the Age of Enlightenment, containing folio-sized pictures of all the wild plants native to Denmark, in the period from 1761 to 1883. History ''Flora Danica'' was proposed by G. C. Oeder, then professor of botany at the Botanic Garden in Copenhagen, in 1753 and was completed 123 years later, in 1883. The complete work comprises 51 parts and 3 supplements, containing 3,240 copper engraved plates. The original plan was to cover all plants, including bryophytes, lichens and fungi native to crown lands of the Danish king, that is Denmark, Schleswig-Holstein, Oldenburg- Delmenhorst and Norway with its North Atlantic dependencies Iceland, the Faroe Islands and Greenland. ''Botanisk Tidsskrift'' (standard abbreviation ''Bot. Tidsskr.'') was a Danish mixed scientific and amateur journal concerning botany, issued in Copenhagen by the Danish Botanical Society. It was published from 1866 to 1980, when it fused with Botaniska Notiser, Friesia and Norwegian Journal of Botany to form the Nordic Journal of Botany. Galathea Expeditions
The ''Galathea'' expeditions comprise a series of three Danish ship-based scientific research expeditions in the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, carried out with material assistance from the Royal Danish Navy and, with regard to the second and third expeditions, under the auspices of the Danish Expedition Foundation. All three expeditions circumnavigated the world from west to east and followed similar routes. Hans Fischer (January 6, 1909 – April 19, 1958) was a Swiss painter. He was well known as the author and illustrator of the children's book '' Pitschi''. His nickname was Fis. Life and works Hans Fischer first attended the Ecole des Beaux-Arts industriels in Geneva, then studied in Zürich. He worked as artist, graphic designer and cartoonist. He also painted sets for the Cabaret Cornichon. In 1945 an exhibition of his work took place at the Berner Kunsthalle.
