Elisa Hall De Asturias
Elisa Hall de Asturias (26 February 1900 – 20 May 1982) was a Guatemalan writer and intellectual. In the 1930s, she wrote a book ''Semilla de mostaza'' that became the source of controversy for nearly 70 years. Anti-feminist biases at the time that she wrote led to the conclusion that she could not have written the book, which had become a mainstay of Guatemala's literary heritage. In 2011 and 2012, new research into the controversy verified that she was the author of the work. Federico Hernández De León
Federico Hernández de León (March 4, 1883 – 1959) was a Guatemalan writer, historian and journalist. He graduated from the Instituto Nacional Central para Varones of Guatemala, with a high school diploma in 1900. Active politically, was arrested during the last few years of the government of president Manuel Estrada Cabrera, being held in the Central Penitentiary of Guatemala until the president was deposed on April 14, 1920. After his release, he went straight to take over the ''Diario de Centro América'' semi-official newspaper of Guatemala at the time. Later, he directed ''Nuestro Diario'' along with Carlos Bauer Aviles. Primer Congreso Interamericano De Mujeres
The Primer Congreso Interamericano de Mujeres (First Inter-American Congress of Women) was a feminist meeting held from 21 to 27 August 1947 in Guatemala City, Guatemala. It was called together by the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) and hosted by the Unión Democrática de Mujeres of Guatemala. This organization had been formed by Angelina Acuña de Castañeda, Berta Corleto, Elisa Hall de Asturias, Gloria Menéndez Mina de Padilla, Rosa de Mora, Irene de Peyré, and Graciela Quan immediately following the Guatemalan 1944 coup d'état to push for recognition of women's civil rights. Graciela Quan
Graciela Quan Valenzuela (1911 – 22 January 1999) was a Guatemalan lawyer and activist. She campaigned for women's suffrage, writing a draft proposal for Guatemala's enfranchisement law. She was also a social worker, adviser to the President of Guatemala, delegate to the United Nations and the President of the Inter-American Commission of Women. Biography Graciela Quan Valenzuela was born in 1911 in Guatemala and graduated from the Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala in 1942 as the country's first female attorney. She was the last woman to graduate before women were granted civil rights. Irene De Peyré
Irene de Peyré or Irene Oliveros de Peyré (October 20, 1873 in Santa Rosa Department, Guatemala – June 28, 1968 in Guatemala City, Guatemala) was a Guatemalan educator and feminist. She attended the teacher's training school, Instituto Normal Central para Señoritas Belén In 1920, she established La Alianza Francesa de Guatemala to preserve the culture of French Guatemalans and in 1921, in order promote learning she established the Liceo Francés. In 1930, she was Guatemala's delegate to the Inter-American Commission of Women, which at that time was involved in the preparation of a massive volume evaluating the effects of marriage on women's citizenship. María Angelina Acuña Sagastume de Castañeda (31 January 1905 – 14 June 2006) was a Guatemalan writer of prose and poetry. A major poetry figure in her country, she was especially known for her rigor in managing classical verse within the sonnet. The writer Margarita Carrera called Acuña the "sister in spirit of Gabriela Mistral".
