Elgin Area School District U46, often referred to as "U-46", is a unit school district headquartered in Elgin, Kane County, Illinois. Covering , the district serves portions of eleven communities in the northwest suburbs of Chicago in Cook, DuPage and Kane Counties. WEPS
WEPS (88.9 FM) is a radio station licensed to serve Elgin, Illinois, United States. The station is owned by the Elgin Area School District U46 and licensed to Board of Education School District U-46. Founded in 1950, WEPS is the oldest non-commercial educational radio station in the state of Illinois. WEPS broadcasts a classical music format as a member of Wisconsin Public Radio's WPR Music network. WEPS broadcasts student programming aside WPR Music. Larkin High School
Larkin High School (''LHS'') is a public four-year high school located in Elgin, Illinois, United States. It is part of Elgin Area School District U46, which also includes Elgin High School, Bartlett High School, South Elgin High School, and Streamwood High School. History Larkin High School was built in 1962 on the former farm of Cyrus H. Larkin, after whom the school is named. Elgin citizens were divided on the naming of the new west side high school. Many voiced their opinion to the school board that naming it Elgin (West) HS would better rival the original Elgin HS located on the east side of the Fox River in the City of Elgin (thus Elgin East). The Larkin name ultimately prevailed. The yearbook is named the ''Cerulean'' in honor of the school's colors: cerulean (a deep blue) and white. Elgin National Watch Company Observatory
The Elgin National Watch Company Observatory is a historic building in Elgin, in the U.S. state of Illinois. It was built in 1910 to serve the Elgin National Watch Company two blocks to the west. The two-story observatory provided data on time that was scientifically accurate to a tenth of a second. Manufacturers could then produce a more accurate watch. The observatory was an important part of the company's legacy, and they even changed their motto to reflect this. By 1950, the Elgin National Watch Company could no longer compete with wristwatch companies. The observatory was donated to a local school district and became known as the School District U-46 Planetarium/Observatory.
