Frank Elgee
Frank Watson Elgee (born 8 November 1880 in North Ormesby ( Middlesbrough) Yorkshire, England) was a published archaeologist, geologist and naturalist. He wrote several books on the North York Moors such as ''The Moorlands of North-Eastern Yorkshire'' (1912), ''The Romans in Cleveland'' (1923) and ''Early Man in North East Yorkshire'' (1930). In 1933 Leeds University conferred on him an Honorary degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Early life and career He was born in Kings Road, North Ormesby the eldest of four children - Frank Watson (1880), Allan (1883), Edward (1885), and Amy Maria (1887-1942). His father, Thomas (1851-1939) was Clerk and Bookkeeper at the local Pig iron works. His mother, Jane née Coates (1851-1907), was in poor health but dealt with his early education and he attended the local Public Elementary School in North Ormesby. Cyril Hammond Elgee
Cyril Hammond Elgee (18 October 1871 – 17 August 1917) was a British colonial administrator in Nigeria, based in Ibadan at the time when the basic colonial institutions were being established. During World War I (1914–18) he was Acting Commissioner of Montserrat for a period. Early years Cyril Hammond Elgie (he later changed his surname to Elgee) was born on 18 October 1871, eldest son of the Reverend Walter Francis Elgie. His mother was Catherine, daughter of Colonel F. Hammond of the 75th Regiment and widow of Captain Webber of the 42nd regiment. She died on 25 February 1881. Cyril was admitted to Lancing College as a scholar in May 1885, and left in July 1889. He was admitted to the Royal Military College, Sandhurst in 1890. Career In 1892 Elgee became a second lieutenant in the Bedfordshire Regiment. He was made a lieutenant in 1893. Jane Wilde
Jane Francesca Agnes, Lady Wilde (née Elgee; 27 December 1821 – 3 February 1896) was an Irish poet under the pen name Speranza and supporter of the nationalist movement. Lady Wilde had a special interest in Irish folktales, which she helped to gather and was the mother of Oscar Wilde and Willie Wilde. Personal life Jane was the last of the four children of Charles Elgee (1783–1824), the son of Archdeacon John Elgee, a Wexford solicitor, and his wife Sarah (née Kingsbury, d. 1851). Her father died when she was three years old which meant she was largely self-educated. Even so, she is said to have mastered 10 languages by the age of 18. She claimed that her great-grandfather was an Italian who had come to Wexford in the 18th century; in fact, the Elgees descended from Durham labourers.
