Elegy (Kernis)
''Elegy – for those we lost'' (sometimes written as ''to those we lost'') is a musical composition written in May 2020 by the American composer Aaron Jay Kernis. The piece was written during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States shortly after the composer had recovered from a mild case of the illness himself and is thus dedicated "to beloved victims of COVID-19, and their families, in mourning." It was originally composed for solo piano and was virtually premiered by the composer on YouTube on May 15, 2020. However, Kernis later made arrangements of the work for various other ensembles, including harp and trumpet duet, string orchestra, and orchestra, among others. The piece is cast in a single movement and lasts about six minutes. Aaron Jay Kernis
Aaron Jay Kernis (born January 15, 1960) is a Pulitzer Prize- and Grammy Award-winning American composer serving as a member of the Yale School of Music faculty. Kernis spent 15 years as the music advisor to the Minnesota Orchestra and as Director of the Minnesota Orchestra's Composers' Institute, and is currently the Workshop Director of the Nashville Symphony Composer Lab. He has received numerous awards and honors throughout his thirty-five year career. He lives in New York City with his wife, pianist Evelyne Luest, and their two children. Contrabassoon
The contrabassoon, also known as the double bassoon, is a larger version of the bassoon, sounding an octave lower. Its technique is similar to its smaller cousin, with a few notable differences. The large blades allow ample vibration that produces the low register of the instrument. The COVID-19 pandemic swept the world in the early months of 2020, causing massive economic and social disruption. In addition to the disease itself, populations have often dealt with lockdowns, shortages and pandemic fatigue, political and cultural turmoil. This has made the pandemic era a time of exceptional stress. The bass trombone (german: Bassposaune, it, trombone basso) is the bass instrument in the trombone family of brass instruments. Modern instruments are pitched in the same B♭ as the tenor trombone but with a larger bore, bell and mouthpiece to facilitate low register playing, and usually two valves to fill in the missing range immediately above the pedal tones.
