The Gathering of Nations is the largest pow-wow in the United States and North America. It is held annually on the fourth weekend in April, on the Powwow Grounds at Expo NM, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Over 565 tribes from around the United States and 220 from Canada travel to Albuquerque to participate. Tens of thousands of spectators attend each year. The event has a significant economic impact, generating approximately $24 million for Albuquerque in 2019. The Gathering of Nations employs nearly 300 people during the event. The parent company, Gathering of Nations, Ltd. produces the annual powwow. Red Earth (band)
Red Earth is an American rock band from Albuquerque, New Mexico which has released three independent albums. Career Red Earth was started by musicians from various backgrounds and representing various tribal nations from Dineh, Jemez Pueblo, Isleta Pueblo, Laguna Pueblo, Chicanas/os, Lakotas, mixed-nations, and biiliigaanaa (white) brothers and sisters. The band formed from jam sessions in downtown Albuquerque, New Mexico in the basement of a rented house at 410 8th Street in 1995. Red Earth quickly became a local favorite band and started playing around various cities, towns, pueblos, and across the Southwest, notably on numerous Indian Reservations and music festivals. True to their diverse Southwest roots, the band combines Indigenous experiences and insights with energetic combinations of funk, rock, heavy metal, reggae, ska, Latin music, and jazz influences. Expo New Mexico
The New Mexico State Fair is an annual state fair held in September at Expo New Mexico (formerly the New Mexico State Fairgrounds) in the city of Albuquerque, New Mexico. The event features concerts, competitions, rodeos, carnival rides, games, farm animals, horses, agriculture, art of the American Southwest, New Mexican cuisine, and New Mexico music. The Tingley Coliseum is on the fairgrounds. History The fair was first held in October 1881 under the direction of Elias S. Stover. A powwow (also pow wow or pow-wow) is a gathering with dances held by many Native American and First Nations communities. Inaugurated in 1923, powwows today are an opportunity for Indigenous people to socialize, dance, sing, and honor their cultures. Powwows may be private or public, indoors or outdoors. The 53rd Annual Grammy Awards were held on February 13, 2011, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. They were broadcast on CBS with a rating of 26.6 million viewers. Barbra Streisand was honored as the MusiCares Person of the Year two nights prior to the telecast on February 11. Nominations were announced on December 1, 2010 and a total of 108 awards were presented. Tom Bee was the CEO and founder of Sound of America Records (SOAR), the first Native American owned record label. XIT Born on November 8, 1941, in Gallup, New Mexico, Bee was adopted at birth and raised in the reservation border town of Gallup, near the Navajo Nation. Best known as founder and featured artist with the popular 1970s music group XIT, Bee's composition "(We've Got) Blue Skies" was recorded by Michael Jackson and The Jackson 5 on their worldwide hit album "Maybe Tomorrow." This led to an artist, writer, and producer contract with Motown Records. While under contract with Motown, XIT released two widely acclaimed albums entitled "Plight of the Redman" and "Silent Warrior." It derives from Pueblo music in the 13th century, and with the folk music of Hispanos during the 16th to 19th centuries in Santa Fe de Nuevo México. Reggae
Reggae () is a music genre that originated in Jamaica during the late 1960s. The term also denotes the modern popular music of Jamaica and its Jamaican diaspora, diaspora.
