Electoral District Of Toowoomba West
Toowoomba West was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland. It was created with the 1960 redistribution and removed by the 1972 redistribution. The seat was based in the City of Toowoomba. The member for North Toowoomba, Jack Duggan successfully stood for election in Toowoomba West in 1960 after his previous seat was lost in the redistribution. The sitting member, Ray Bousen, successfully stood for election in the new seat of Toowoomba North in the 1972 election. Toowoomba ( , nicknamed 'The Garden City' and 'T-Bar') is a city in the Toowoomba Region of the Darling Downs, Queensland, Australia. It is west of Queensland's capital city Brisbane by road. The urban population of Toowoomba as of the 2021 Census was 142,163, having grown at an average annual rate of 1.45% over the previous two decades. Toowoomba is the second-most-populous inland city in the country after the national capital of Canberra and hence the largest city on the Darling Downs, and it is among the largest regional centres in Queensland. It is also referred to as the capital of the Darling Downs. The Toowoomba region is the home of two main Aboriginal language groups, the Giabal whose lands extend south of the city and Jarowair whose lands extend north of the city. Legislative Assembly Of Queensland
The Legislative Assembly of Queensland is the sole chamber of the unicameral Parliament of Queensland established under the Constitution of Queensland. Elections are held every four years and are done by full preferential voting. The Assembly has 93 members, who have used the letters MP after their names since 2000 (previously they were styled MLAs). There is approximately the same population in each electorate; however, that has not always been the case (in particular, a malapportionment system - not, strictly speaking, a gerrymander - dubbed the '' Bjelkemander'' was in effect during the 1970s and 1980s). Jack Duggan (politician)
John Edmund Duggan (30 December 1910 – 19 June 1993) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. He was the Deputy Premier of Queensland from 1953 until 1957 and Leader of the Opposition of Queensland from 1958 until 1966. Early life Duggan was born at Port Augusta, South Australia, the son of John Stephen Duggan and his wife Charlotte (née Mathieson). He was educated at the Marree and Hoyleton primary schools before attending a Marist Brothers college in South Australia. By the age of 14 he was orphaned with his mother dying in December 1922 during child birth and his father dying from spinal tuberculosis two years later and Duggan and his siblings were cared for by an auntie and uncle in Toowoomba. He then left school and took up a job as a sales assistant to help support his younger brothers and sisters. He gained official leave from parliament to join the Australian Army in 1941 during World War II, serving in the 25th Battalion seeing action in New Guinea. ... Ray Bousen
William Raymond James Bousen (13 January 1911 – 28 May 2002) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography Bousen was born in Toowoomba, Queensland, the son of Sydney Herbert Bousen and his wife Annie Louisa (née Stayte). He was educated at Toowoomba North State School before attending the Toowoomba Technical College. He worked for the Queensland Railways all his life in a variety of jobs. On 29 April 1933 he married Doris Evelyn Hooper and together had two daughters. He died at Coolum in May 2002. It replaced the abolished electorate of Toowoomba West. Toowoomba North is largely based around the upper half of the city of Toowoomba. The Australian Labor Party (Queensland Branch), commonly known as Queensland Labor or as just Labor inside Queensland, is the state branch of the Australian Labor Party in the state of Queensland.
