Electoral District Of Mirani
Mirani is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland. It is currently represented by Glen Kelly of the Liberal National Party. It covers much of the Queensland coast between the cities of Rockhampton and Mackay, as well as the hinterland west of Mackay. Major towns within its boundaries include Sarina, Marian, Mount Morgan, and its namesake, Mirani. It also contains the outer Mackay suburbs of Bakers Creek, Ooralea, and parts of Paget. Mirani was historically a safely conservative seat, and was held by the Country Party and its successors the National Party and Liberal National Party from 1947 to 2015. A redistribution in 2008 made Mirani a notionally Labor held seat with a 1.2% margin, but veteran incumbent Ted Malone achieved a swing strong enough to retain this seat at the 2009 election. Sarina is a rural town and coastal locality in the Mackay Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , the locality of Sarina had a population of 5,619 people. Geography Sarina lies just inland of the east coast of Queensland, south of the city of Mackay, and approximately north of the city of Rockhampton. The Bruce Highway passes through the locality from south to north, as does the North Coast railway line. The town of Sarina is located on Plane Creek, which flows into the Coral Sea, but most of the urban development is on the northern side of the creek. Stephen Andrew
Stephen Seymour James Andrew (born 9 December 1968) is an Australian politician who served as the member for Mirani in the Queensland Legislative Assembly from 2017 to 2024 when he was defeated by Glen Kelly at the 2024 Queensland state election. Andrew describes himself as a "fourth-generation South Sea Islander", and is the first South Sea Islander to be elected to parliament. His great-great-grandmother Lucy Querro of Ambae Island (now part of Vanuatu) was one of the Pacific Islander workers who came to Queensland to work in either the sugarcane fields or domestic service; Andrew claims she was " blackbirded". Electoral District Of Fitzroy (Queensland)
Fitzroy was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland. The district was based in central Queensland, west of Rockhampton. It included the towns of Baralaba, Blackwater, Duaringa, Dysart, Mount Morgan and Wowan as well as some of Rockhampton's outer suburbs. The electorate was first contested in 1992. An earlier district based in the same region was also called Fitzroy. It was first contested in 1888 and abolished in 1960. In 2008, Fitzroy was abolished—with effect at the 2009 state election—as a result of a redistribution undertaken by the Electoral Commission of Queensland. James Pearce (born 28 July 1948) is an Australian politician, born in the Sydney suburb of Paddington. He was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland from 1989 to 2009. 2015 Queensland State Election
The 2015 Queensland state election was held on 31 January 2015 to elect all 89 members of the unicameral Legislative Assembly of Queensland. The centre-right Liberal National Party (LNP), led by Premier Campbell Newman, attempted to win a second term but was defeated by the opposition centre-left Australian Labor Party (ALP), led by Opposition Leader Annastacia Palaszczuk. Ted Malone (Australian Politician)
George Edward (Ted) Malone (born 14 November 1943) is an Australian politician. He was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly from 1994 to 2015, representing the electorate of Mirani for the Nationals and its successor the Liberal National Party. He was Assistant Minister for Emergency Volunteers between November 2012 and January 2015. Malone was born in Mackay, and was a cane farmer and grazier before entering politics. Paget is a coastal suburb of Mackay in the Mackay Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , Paget had a population of 339 people. Geography Paget is bounded to the east by the Coral Sea, to the west by the Bruce Highway, and to the south by Bakers Creek. The suburb is principally used for industrial purposes. The North Coast railway line passes from south to north through the suburb with the Mackay railway station located in Paget (). The land is flat and low-lying (below 10 metres above sea level). Ooralea is a southern suburb of Mackay in the Mackay Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , Ooralea had a population of 3,691 people. Geography Ooralea is an outer suburb of Mackay. The Peak Downs Highway bounds the suburb to the north and the Bruce Highway bounds the suburb to the east. Although a suburb, Ooralea is only partially used for residential housing with the rest still used for farming sugarcane.
