Electoral District Of Belmont (Queensland)
Belmont was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland from 1960 to 1977. First created for the 1960 state election, the district was based in the south-eastern suburbs of Brisbane, taking in areas previously belonging to the districts of Bulimba, Mount Gravatt and Wynnum. Typically a Labor seat, the district fell to the Liberal Party at the Coalition landslide election of 1974. Belmont was abolished ahead of 1977 state election and largely absorbed into the neighbouring district of Chatsworth. Belmont, Queensland
Belmont is an outer suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Belmont had a population of 4,498 people. Geography While much of the suburb remains as undeveloped blocks of bush mixed with large rural properties, some areas have built-up residential estates. Two of Brisbane's main roads, the Gateway Motorway above and Old Cleveland Road underneath, cross at a large intersection in Belmont. Belmont has become an affluent suburb with large estates sitting on acres of land. Homes can range from around to and over. Mount Petrie is in the south of the suburb () and rises to above sea level. History The local indigenous people hunted and camped within the creeks and hills of Belmont, both before and after white settlement of the area. A corroboree ground existed on banks of Bulimba Creek and mineral springs near Mount Petrie were a popular camping spot for the Aboriginal people. 1977 Queensland State Election
Elections were held in the Australian state of Queensland on 12 November 1977 to elect the 82 members of the state's Legislative Assembly. The election resulted in a fourth consecutive victory for the National- Liberal Coalition under Joh Bjelke-Petersen. It was the eighth victory of the National Party in Queensland since it first came to office in 1957. Issues The major issue in the election was law and order. In 1977, the Government had passed a law making it illegal to march in the street without a permit, which were rarely given. The Coalition argued that this prevented traffic disruption and other inconveniences to the people of Brisbane, while the ALP claimed that it was a curtailment of civil liberties. Joh Bjelke-Petersen also no longer had the Whitlam Labor Government (which was unpopular in Queensland) to use as a campaigning tool. David Byrne (Australian Politician)
David Edward Byrne (born 20 January 1952) is an Australian activist and politician. A former Augustinian friar and Liberal member of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland, he later moved to Cape York, became an advocate for Aboriginal land rights and co-founded the Cape York Land Council with Noel Pearson. Byrne was born in Sydney and was educated at St Martin's Catholic Primary School and Villanova College in Brisbane. He initially entered the Augustinian seminary and became a friar for five years, but later studied teaching at the University of Queensland. A member of the state executive of the Young Liberals, he was elected to the Queensland Legislative Assembly at the 1974 state election amidst the National-Liberal landslide of that year. At 22, he was at that time the state's youngest ever MLA, and he graduated from university during his term. Fred Newton (politician)
Harold Francis "Fred" Newton (12 July 1921 – 28 December 1990) was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early Days Newton was born in Maryborough to Francis and Ada Laura Newton (née Davey). Due to family financial pressures Harold and his sister Ada were made wards of the state and sent to an orphanage in Nudgee, Brisbane for three years. As state wards were deemed to owe a debt to the state Newton was sent work on a dairy farm in Pittsworth. This farm was eventually sold and he was relocated to a farm in Maryvale. When he turned 18 he returned to his family in Maryborough. In 1946, Newton was working in a bacon factory when due to a strike he left his job and became a builder's labourer. Chatsworth is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland. The electorate is centred on the south-eastern suburbs of Brisbane and stretches north to Tingalpa, west to Carina Heights, east to Tingalpa Creek and south to Bulimba Creek. Unusually for a suburban seat, the district of Chatsworth is not named after a suburb within its boundaries but is instead named after Chatsworth Road. This is despite the fact Chatsworth Road does not fall within the present district of Chatsworth; it runs through the neighbouring district of Greenslopes. Elections were held in the Australian state of Queensland on 7 December 1974 to elect the 82 members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland. The National- Liberal Coalition won a third consecutive victory under Joh Bjelke-Petersen, and the seventh consecutive victory for the National Party in Queensland, which had renamed itself from the Country Party since the previous election. The Labor Party lost two-thirds of its seats, including that of leader Perc Tucker, its worst showing in an election until 2012 and thus a landslide victory for the Coalition.
