Elections In The Czech Republic
All elections in the Czech Republic are based on the principle of universal suffrage. Any adult citizen who is at least 18 years old can vote, except those who have been stripped of their legal capacities by a court, usually on the basis of mental illness. Elected representatives are elected directly by the citizens without any intermediaries. Election laws are not part of the constitution, but – unlike regular laws – they cannot be changed without the consensus of both houses of the Parliament. The Czech Republic uses a two-round plurality voting system for the presidential and Senate elections and an open party-list proportional representation system for all other elections. The proportional representation system uses the Sainte-Laguë method for allocating seats. Universal Suffrage
Universal suffrage or universal franchise ensures the right to vote for as many people bound by a government's laws as possible, as supported by the " one person, one vote" principle. For many, the term universal suffrage assumes the exclusion of the young and non-citizens (among others). At the same time, some insist that more inclusion is needed before suffrage can be truly universal. Democratic theorists, especially those hoping to achieve more universal suffrage, support presumptive inclusion, where the legal system would protect the voting rights of all subjects unless the government can clearly prove that disenfranchisement is necessary. Pirates And Mayors
Pirates and Mayors (, PirStan) was a liberal progressive centrist political alliance in the Czech Republic, formed for the 2021 legislative election, consisting of the Czech Pirate Party (Piráti) and Mayors and Independents (STAN). As of the 2021 Czech election it governs the Czech Republic in a coalition with the SPOLU alliance. Tomáš Zima (born 2 July 1966) is a Czech physician, chemist, and a teaching professor in the fields of biochemistry, clinical chemistry and laboratory medicine. Karel Diviš (born 24 March 1976) is a Czech entrepreneur in information technology. He was a candidate in the 2023 Czech presidential election, finishing seventh in the first round vote. Career Diviš was born in Česká Lípa in 1976. Marek Hilšer (born 23 March 1976) is a Czech politician and university lecturer who has been serving as the senator for Prague 2 since 2018. He also stood in the 2018 and 2023 Czech presidential elections. Early life Hilšer was born in Chomutov in 1976. His family emigrated from Czechoslovakia in 1989 but returned in 1990. Freedom And Direct Democracy
Freedom and Direct Democracy (, SPD) is a political party in the Czech Republic. It is led by Tomio Okamura and it holds 20 seats in the Chamber of Deputies. The party has been described as right-wing or far-right on the political spectrum. It has also been described as espousing right-wing populism and has expressed opposition to immigration and is staunchly Eurosceptic, while in their political program they state their support for direct democracy. At the end of 2022, the party had 10,682 members and was the fastest growing party in the country in terms of members. Jaroslav Bašta
Jaroslav Bašta (15 May 1948 – 7 April 2024) was a Czech politician and diplomat. He was a signatory of Charter 77. Between 1998 and 2000 he served in the cabinet of Miloš Zeman as Minister without portfolio. Bašta became the Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Russia in September 2000. He served for five years in Russia, later becoming Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Ukraine, where he worked for three years until stepping down for health reasons in 2010. In 2021, he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies of the Czech Republic, Chamber of Deputies for Freedom and Direct Democracy (SPD). On 10 September 2022, SPD announced it would nominate Bašta for the 2023 Czech presidential election. He was also endorsed by the Tricolour Citizens' Movement and the Workers' Party of Social Justice (DSSS). Pavel Fischer (born 26 August 1965) is a Czech politician and diplomat who has been Senator from Prague 12 since 2018. Fischer previously served as Czech Ambassador to France from 2003 to 2010. He was a presidential candidate in 2018, when he finished third with 10.23% of the vote, and in 2023, when he finished fourth with 6.75% of the vote. He was elected to the Czech Senate in 2018.
