Major-General Eldon Nicholas Somerville Millar, is a senior British Army officer who currently serves as Defence Services Secretary. Military career Millar was commissioned the Royal Engineers on 14 October 1994. After serving as commanding officer of 33 Engineer Regiment (EOD), he became head of Army Engagement and Communications in October 2019 and Defence Services Secretary in 2022. Rear Admiral James Norman Macleod, (born 17 March 1970) is a senior Royal Navy officer. Education Macleod also holds a Master of Science in Systems Engineering from Cranfield University and a Master of Arts in Defence Studies from King's College London. Naval career Macleod joined the Royal Navy on 4 January 1989. He became Deputy Assistant Chief of Staff, Integrated Change Programme in March 2014, and Head of Armed Forces Remuneration at the Ministry of Defence in September 2016. After attending the Royal College of Defence Studies, he was appointed Assistant Chief of the Defence Staff (Personnel Capability) and Defence Services Secretary in March 2019, with promotion to rear-admiral from 27 March 2019. Major general (Maj Gen) is a "two-star" rank in the British Army and Royal Marines. The rank was also briefly used by the Royal Air Force for a year and a half, from its creation to August 1919. In the British Army, a major general is the customary rank for the appointment of division commander. In the Royal Marines, the rank of major general is held by the Commandant General. A Major General is senior to a Brigadier but subordinate to lieutenant general. The King's Commendation for Valuable Service is a British military award for meritorious service in an operational theatre. It was established in 1994, when the award of the Queen's Commendation for Brave Conduct and the Queen's Commendation for Valuable Service in the Air were discontinued. Criteria A King’s Commendation for Valuable Service is open to all ranks of the British Armed Forces for meritorious service, not in the face of an enemy, in an operational theatre. It is the lowest level of merit award, classed as 'level 4', alongside a Mention in Dispatches and other King's Commendations. The award does not entitle the holder to any post nominal letters.
