Elaine C Smith
Elaine Constance Smith (born 2 August 1958) is a Scottish actress and comedian. She is known for her roles in the BBC Scotland sitcoms ''City Lights (1984 TV series), City Lights'' (1984–1991), ''Rab C. Nesbitt'' (1988–2014), and ''Two Doors Down (TV series), Two Doors Down'' (2013–present), winning a BAFTA Scotland award for the latter. In 2012, Smith co-wrote and starred in ''I Dreamed a Dream (musical), I Dreamed a Dream'', a stage production about the life and career of Scottish singer Susan Boyle. She has campaigned for Scottish independence and continues to be a supporter. Education and early career Smith attended the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and then completed a teacher training course at the Moray House of Education in Edinburgh, where she then worked as a drama teacher at Firrhill High School for three years. Newarthill
Newarthill is a village in North Lanarkshire, Scotland, situated roughly three miles north-east of the town of Motherwell. It has a population of around 6,200. Most local amenities are shared with the adjacent villages of Carfin, Holytown and New Stevenston which have a combined population of around 20,000 across the four localities. Sketch Comedy
Sketch comedy comprises a series of short, amusing scenes or vignettes, called "sketches" or, "skits", commonly between one and ten minutes long, performed by a group of comic actors or comedians. While the form developed and became popular in music hall in Britain and vaudeville in North America, today it is used widely in variety shows, as well as in late night talk shows and even some sitcoms. While sketch comedy is now associated mostly with adult entertainment, certain children's television series such have used it, too. The sketches may be improvised live by the performers, developed through improvisation before public performance, or scripted and rehearsed in advance like a play. STV (TV Channel)
STV is a free-to-air public broadcast television channel owned and operated by the STV Group. It is made up of the Central Scotland and Northern Scotland ITV public broadcaster licences, formerly known as Scottish Television (now legally STV Central Ltd) and Grampian Television (now legally STV North Ltd) respectively. The STV brand refers to the on-air name used by Scottish Television for much of its history - notably in the 1970s and early 1980s. Hububb is a Children's Television programme broadcast on BBC One in the United Kingdom, it was named after Les Bubb who also played the title character with the same name. ''City Lights'' is a Scottish television sitcom made by BBC Scotland and set in Glasgow. It ran from 1984 to 1991 (networked 1987 to 1991) and was written by Bob Black. Two stage shows, featuring the original cast, toured Scotland. Premise It starred Gerard Kelly as Willie Melvin, a bank-teller at the fictional Strathclyde Savings Bank (whose logo was very similar to the TSB), with dreams of becoming a novelist. Most of the plots revolved around his attempts to get his book, the autobiographical ''My Childhood Up A Close'', published, however his efforts are continually thwarted by both his own incompetence and overall gullibility.
