El Turco (guide)
El Turco, or The Turk, (died August 5 1541) was a Native American (either Wichita or Pawnee) guide and slave of Francisco Vázquez de Coronado along with Big Eyes and Ysopete. He was nicknamed El Turco by the Spaniards because of his similar appearance to Turks. He was held captive at Cicúique near contemporary Pecos. In spring 1541, he led the Spaniards to the city of Quivira which was said to hold gold, silver and rich textiles. After the Spaniards reached Quivira, they were disappointed to find out the stories were false and that El Turco had lied and conspired with the Quivirans to kill the Spaniards and their horses. As retribution, Francisco Vazquez de Colorado ordered his men to have him garroted before leaving Quivira on August 5, 1541. Wichita People
The Wichita people, or , are a confederation of Southern Plains Native American tribes. Historically they spoke the Wichita language and Kichai language, both Caddoan languages. They are indigenous to Oklahoma, Texas, and Kansas. Today, Wichita tribes, which include the Kichai people, Waco, Taovaya, Tawakoni, Yscani, and the Wichita proper (or Guichita), are federally recognized as the Wichita and Affiliated Tribes (Wichita, Keechi, Waco and Tawakoni). Pawnee People
The Pawnee, also known by their endonym (which translates to "Men of Men"), are an Plains Indians, Indigenous people of the Great Plains that historically lived in Nebraska and northern Kansas but today are based in Oklahoma. They are the federally recognized Pawnee Nation of Oklahoma, who are headquartered in Pawnee, Oklahoma. Their Pawnee language belongs to the Caddoan language family. Francisco Vázquez De Coronado
Francisco Vázquez de Coronado (; 1510 – 22 September 1554) was a Spanish conquistador and explorer who led a large expedition from what is now Mexico to present-day Kansas through parts of the southwestern United States between 1540 and 1542. Vázquez de Coronado had hoped to reach the Cities of Cíbola, often referred to now as the mythical Seven Cities of Gold. His expedition marked the first European sightings of the Grand Canyon and the Colorado River, among other landmarks. His name is often Anglicized as Vasquez de Coronado or just Coronado. Big Eyes (Wichita Woman)
Big Eyes ( – after 1542) was a Wichita woman who acted as a guide for Francisco Vázquez de Coronado's expedition exploring what is now the southwestern United States. Sometimes described simply as the tattooed woman, Big Eyes had two lines tattooed under her eyes accentuating her cheekbones, as was customary among Wichita women. Big Eyes was captured by Tejas people in 1535, who traded her to Tiwa Puebloans in what is now Arizona. In 1540 Coronado's expedition defeated the Tiwa in the Tiguex War near the Red River; Big Eyes was captured and taken as a slave by one of Coronado's officers, Juan de Zaldívar. Being familiar with the area, Big Eyes acted as a guide for the expedition along with a man known as El Turco, who claimed to know the location of the mythical Seven Cities of Gold. Quivira
Quivira was a province of the ancestral Wichita people, located near the Great Bend of the Arkansas River in central Kansas, The exact site may be near present-day Lyons extending northeast to Salina. The Wichita city of Etzanoa, which flourished between 1450 and 1700, is likely part of Quivira. Spanish conquistador Francisco Vásquez de Coronado visited in 1541. Description Archaeological evidence suggests that Quivira was located near the Great Bend of the Arkansas River in central Kansas. The remains of several Indigenous communities have been found near Lyons along Cow Creek and the Little Arkansas River along with articles of Spanish manufacture dating from Coronado's time. The Indian Pueblo Cultural Center, located in Albuquerque, is owned and operated by the 19 Indian Pueblos of New Mexico and dedicated to the preservation and perpetuation of Pueblo Indian culture, history, and art.
