El Descanso Bombing
On 12 April 1985, the El Descanso restaurant in Madrid, Spain was bombed in a terrorist attack. The explosion caused the three-story building to collapse, crashing down on about 200 diners and employees, killing 18 people, all Spanish citizens, and injuring 82 others, including eleven Americans working at the nearby Torrejón Air Base who frequented the restaurant. At the time it was the deadliest attack in Spain since the Spanish Civil War. Terrorism in Spain has been committed by various groups and people. History There have been several phases of terrorism in Spain. Spain was notably affected by a broader wave of anarchist terrorism that started in the late 19th century in Europe in connection to the notion of propaganda of the deed. Several of the perpetrators acting in Spain, such as Michele Angiolillo, Thioulouze, Tomás Ascheri or Girault, were actually foreign. Some of the terrorist attacks in this period include the 1893 Liceo bomb, the 1896 Corpus Christi bomb, or the magnicide of Cánovas del Castillo in 1897. The botched assassination in Madrid of King Alfonso XIII at the Calle Mayor during his wedding left 33 casualties and many wounded. José Barrionuevo
José Barrionuevo (born 13 March 1942) is a Spanish politician. He was the minister of interior from 1982 to 1988. He was jailed from 1998 to 2001 due to his involvement in a dirty war against ETA members. Early life and education Barrionuevo was born in Berja near Almería in 1942. He obtained bachelor degrees in law and journalism. Career and activities Barrionuevo was a member of the pro- Franco student union where he likely met Rodolfo Martín Villa, then interior minister. Barrionuevo became a member of the Socialist Workers' Party. He served as deputy mayor of Madrid and was in charge of the municipal police. Barrionuevo was a member of the Parliament representing Madrid for four terms in the legislatures of III, IV, V, and VI. Abu Musab al-Suri (), born Mustafa bin Abd al-Qadir Setmariam Nasar (; 26 October 1958), is a suspected Al-Qaeda member and writer best known for his 1,600-page book ''The Global Islamic Resistance Call'' (''Da'wat al-muqawamah al-islamiyyah al-'alamiyyah''). He is considered by many as 'the most articulate exponent of the modern jihad and its most sophisticated strategist'. The ''Achille Lauro'' hijacking took place on 7 October 1985, when the Italian ocean liner was hijacked by four men representing the Palestine Liberation Front (PLF) off the coast of Egypt, as she was sailing from Alexandria to Ashdod, Israel.
