El Compadre (The Buddy) was a pickup truck of Honduran origin manufactured during the 1970s and 1980s. History In 1970, Honduras experienced a military dictatorship led by Oswaldo López Arellano, Oswaldo Lopez Arellano. The coup kept the country in relative calm. Honduras had one the lowest crime rates in the Americas. During the period the country maintained economic stability and projects were carried out with public spending. At the beginning of the decade, and with the help of General Motors, the local manufacture of a truck began. It was not as elegant as imported trucks, it was suitable for hard work in rural areas and was affordable for locals. Oswaldo López Arellano
Oswaldo Enrique López Arellano (30 June 1921 – 16 May 2010) was a Honduran politician who twice served as the President of Honduras, first from 1963 to 1971 and again from 1972 until 1975. Early life Lopez was born in Danlí to Enrique López and Carlota Arellano in the department of El Paraíso, an influential family. His parents sent him to an American-sponsored school in Honduras' capital city of Tegucigalpa, where he learned English. He joined the Honduran Army at eighteen and subsequently graduated as a pilot from the Honduran Air Force School (Academia Militar de Aviación de Honduras Capitán Raúl Roberto Barahona Lagos). He then spent 1942-1945 in the U.S. state of Arizona studying mechanical aviation. López served as a colonel for numerous years and eventually rose to the rank of general. The Bedford HA was a car derived van introduced in August 1964 by Bedford, based on the Vauxhall Viva (HA) family car. It was also known as the Bedford Beagle in estate form and Bedford Roma in small campervan form. The Beagle was an officially sanctioned conversion based on the 8 cwt van, carried out by Martin Walter of Folkestone, Kent.
