El Camino Real Derby
The El Camino Real Derby is a Listed American Thoroughbred horse race held in February at Golden Gate Fields in Albany, California. The race is open to three-year-olds willing to race one and one-eighth miles (9 furlongs) on Tapeta, a synthetic racing surface. Northern California's premier Kentucky Derby prep, the El Camino Real Derby was first run in 1982. It was hosted by Bay Meadows racetrack until its closing in August 2008. Originally a Grade III race, the event was downgraded in 2018 to listed status. It was part of the Road to the Kentucky Derby, but no longer so for the 2024 Kentucky Derby. Golden Gate Fields
Golden Gate Fields was an American horse racing race track, track straddling both Albany, California and Berkeley, California along the shoreline of San Francisco Bay adjacent to the Eastshore Freeway in the San Francisco Bay Area. With the closing of the Bay Meadows racetrack on May 11, 2008, it was the only major Thoroughbred racetrack in Northern California. It was owned by The Stronach Group. The track was set on of land in the cities of Albany and Berkeley. Golden Gate Fields' facilities included a one-mile (1,609 m) synthetic track and a turf course measuring 9/10 of a mile, or 7 furlongs plus 132 feet (1,448 m), stalls for 1,420 horses, a main grandstand with seating for about 8,000 customers, a clubhouse with seating for about 5,200 customers, a Turf Club with seating for about 1,500 customers and parking for over 8,500 cars. John Paul Reddam (born July 28, 1955) is a Canadian businessman, Thoroughbred racehorse owner and a former professor of philosophy at California State University, Los Angeles. Biography Career Known by his middle name, J. Paul Reddam was born in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, and graduated from the University of Windsor with a bachelor's degree in psychology. Mario Gutierrez (; born 1987) is a Mexican Thoroughbred horse racing jockey who won the 2012 Santa Anita Derby, Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes aboard I'll Have Another, a colt owned by Windsor, Ontario, native J. Rombauer (born in April 17, 2018) is an American Thoroughbred racehorse who won the 2021 Preakness Stakes. Background Rombauer is a bay Colt (horse), colt who was foaled on April 17, 2018, at Machmer Hall in Paris, Kentucky. He was Breed, bred by John and Diane Fradkin, and races for them as a homebred. The Fradkins have been small breeders since 1997 when they retired Ultrafleet, who had been relatively unsuccessful on the racetrack. Robert A. Baffert (born January 13, 1953) is an American racehorse trainer. He has trained two Triple Crown winners: American Pharoah in 2015 and Justify in 2018.
