Eklund TE-1
The Eklund TE-1 was a Finnish-built single-seat flying boat of the late 1940s. Design and development The TE-1 was designed in late 1948 by Torolf Eklund, who was a Finnish aircraft designer for Valtion Lentokonetehdas between 1935 and 1962. The TE-1 was financed and built by Eklund as a private venture. Operational history The TE-1 first flew in February 1949 powered by a 28 h.p. Poinsard engine. This powerplant suffered a crankcase failure, and as spare parts were no longer available, it was replaced by a Continental A40-5 engine. At the time of its first flight, the TE-1 was claimed to be the world's smallest flying boat. The aircraft last flew in 1969. Torolf Eklund
Torolf Eklund (13 April 1912 – 12 December 2000) was a Finland, Finnish aircraft designer, who worked at the Valtion lentokonetehdas between 1935 and 1962. He privately designed and built his own small single-seat flying boat, the Eklund TE-1, in the late 1940s. He was born in Helsinki. He graduated from the Helsinki University of Technology with a master's degree in aviation during the 1930s. As a student he formed the aviation club Polyteknikkojen Ilmailukerho, which still exists today. He was a reserve officer in the Finnish Air Force and was working for the aircraft industry during World War II. Eklund was also the chairman for the Finnish Aviation Engineer's Club between 1953 and 1954. Eklund was also the designer of the Valmet Tuuli aircraft. The Poinsard 25 hp or Mengin Type B is a small, two-cylinder, air-cooled, horizontally opposed aircraft engine built in France. it was manufactured by Établissements Pierre Mengin from a design by René Poinsard. Power was around 19 kW (25 hp) at 2,280 rpm. A flying boat is a type of seaplane with a hull, allowing it to land on water. It differs from a floatplane in having a fuselage that is purpose-designed for flotation, while floatplanes rely on fuselage-mounted floats for buoyancy. The Finnish Aviation Museum (, ) is a museum specialising in aircraft, located near Helsinki Airport in Veromies, Vantaa, Finland. History The Aviation Museum Society () was founded on 4 December 1969. Opened in 1972, the museum was initially located in the basement of the Helsinki Airport terminal but received its own facilities in 1981. The museum has constantly expanded and today has an office wing, research rooms, aviation library, archive, and an auditorium for 200 people. Currently the museum is owned by the Finnish Aviation Museum Foundation (), founded in 1996.
