Eidsvoll Manor
Eidsvollsbygningen (Literally: ''The Eidsvoll building'') is a historic manor house located at Eidsvoll in Akershus county, Norway. The building is where the Constitution of Norway was signed on 17 May 1814. The estate is now owned by The State of Norway and is an official national monument, as well as a museum. History The building was first constructed in 1770 with a total floor area of over 2000 square metres. Around 1800 Carsten Anker bought the building. He renovated the manor house and he and his family were living there when the Constitution was signed. Carsten Anker went bankrupt in 1822 and the ownership of the estate was transferred to various British creditors in 1823. A group of private citizens led by Henrik Wergeland organized a fundraiser that allowed them to buy the building with the pavilion and surrounding garden (''Eidsvollsparken''). Eidsvoll (; sometimes written as ''Eidsvold'') is a Municipalities of Norway, municipality in Akershus Counties of Norway, county, Norway. It is part of the Romerike Districts of Norway, traditional region. The administrative centre of the municipality is the village of Sundet. General information Etymology The first element is the genitive case of the word ''eid'' (Old Norse: ''eið'') and the last element is ''voll'' (Old Norse: ''vǫllr'') which means "meadow" or "field (agriculture), field". The meaning of the word ''eid'' in this case is "a road passing around a waterfall". People from the districts around the lake (Mjøsa) who were sailing down the river Vorma, and people from Romerike sailing up the same river, both had to enter this area by passing the Sundfossen waterfall. Henrik Wergeland
Henrik Arnold Thaulow Wergeland (17 June 1808 – 12 July 1845) was a Norwegian writer, most celebrated for his poetry but also a prolific playwright, polemicist, historian, and linguist. He is often described as a leading pioneer in the development of a distinctly Norwegian literary heritage and of modern Norwegian culture. Though Wergeland only lived to be 37, his range of pursuits covered literature, theology, history, contemporary politics, social issues, and science.
