Eidsfoss Verk
Eidsfoss is a village in Holmestrand Municipality in Vestfold county, Norway. The village is located at the southern end of the lake Eikeren, about north of the village of Hof and about southeast of the village of Vestfossen (in Øvre Eiker Municipality). The village itself is mostly located on a small isthmus of land between two lakes, with a river connecting them. History The village was the site of the Eidsfos Iron Works () which was first built in 1697. The ironworks was closed in 1873. The village is also the location of the historic Eidsfos Manor () where the owners and manager of the ironworks maintained residence for over 250 years. The manor house, which reflects both Renaissance and Baroque architecture, dates from approximately 1750. Eidsfoss Church
Eidsfoss Church () is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Holmestrand Municipality in Vestfold county, Norway. It is located in the village of Eidsfoss. It is one of the churches for the "Hof, Vassås og Eidsfoss" parish which is part of the Nord-Jarlsberg prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Tunsberg. The white, wooden church was built in a long church design in 1904 using plans drawn up by the architect Holger Sinding-Larsen. The church seats about 200 people. History The Eidsfoss ironworks company decided to build a church in the village of Eidsfoss at the turn of the 20th century. The church paid for most of the cost of the building and it was on donated land. Holger Sinding-Larsen designed the church and Andreas A. Kolstad was hired as the lead builder for the project. Construction began in 1903, but unfortunately on 30 November 1903, the unfinished church building caught fire and burned down. After the rubble was cleared, the church was rebuilt on the same site. Tønsberg (), historically Tunsberg, is a List of towns and cities in Norway, city in Tønsberg Municipality in Vestfold county, Norway. Cappelen (family)
Cappelen is a Norwegian family of German origin. Johan von Cappelen immigrated to Norway in 1653 and became bailiff in Lier. A number of his descendants were businessmen, land owners, civil servants and politicians. The family is especially known for the former publishing company J.W. Cappelens Forlag, one of the oldest publishing houses of Norway. Variants of the name ''Cappelen'' are also used throughout Germany by many other families. Christian V Of Denmark
Christian V (15 April 1646 – 25 August 1699) was King of Denmark and Norway from 1670 until his death in 1699. Well-regarded by the common people, he was the first king anointed at Frederiksborg Castle chapel as absolute monarch since the decree that institutionalized the supremacy of the king in Denmark-Norway. Christian fortified the absolutist system against the aristocracy by accelerating his father's practice of allowing both Holstein nobles and Danish and Norwegian commoners into state service. As king, he wanted to show his power as absolute monarch through architecture, and dreamed of a Danish Palace of Versailles, Versailles. Caspar Herman Hausmann
Caspar Herman Hausmann was a Danish-Norwegian General, lumber merchant and squire. He was born 10 January 1653 at Segeberg in the Danish duchy of Holsten (now Holstein), which was then in union with Denmark-Norway. He died 9 September 1718 in Christiania (now Oslo) and lies in a crypt in Oslo Cathedral. He was married to Karen Nielsdatter Toller (1662–1742). He was a half-brother by Margaret Pape with Ulrik Frederik Gyldenløve (1638–1704) — Gyldenløve was King Frederick III of Denmark's acknowledged illegitimate son and ''Statholder'' (viceroy) to Norway from 1664 until 1699. Military service Hausmann participated as a Danish officer in the Scanian War from 1675 to 1679 and was promoted to lieutenant colonel in 1678. Baroque architecture is a highly decorative and theatrical style which appeared in Italy in the late 16th century and gradually spread across Europe. Ironworks
An ironworks or iron works is an industrial plant where iron is smelted and where heavy iron and steel products are made. The term is both singular and plural, i.e. the singular of ''ironworks'' is ''ironworks''. Ironworks succeeded bloomeries when blast furnaces replaced former methods. An integrated ironworks in the 19th century usually included one or more blast furnaces and a number of puddling furnaces or a foundry with or without other kinds of ironworks. After the invention of the Bessemer process, converters became widespread, and the appellation steelworks replaced ironworks.
