Egon Norbert Zimmermann
Josef Egon Norbert Zimmermann (19 February 1933 – 27 February 2016) was an Austrian alpine skier. He placed tenth in the downhill event at the 1960 Winter Olympics. He should not be confused with the fellow Olympic alpine skier Egon Zimmermann who also competed in the 1960s. At the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 1958 in Austria, Zimmermann met American skier Penny Pitou. Alpine skiing, or downhill skiing, is the pastime of sliding down snow-covered slopes on skis with fixed-heel bindings, unlike other types of skiing ( cross-country, Telemark, or ski jumping), which use skis with free-heel bindings. The 1960 Winter Olympics (officially the VIII Olympic Winter Games and also known as Squaw Valley 1960) were a winter multi-sport event held from February 18 to 28, 1960, at the Squaw Valley Resort (now known as Palisades Tahoe) in Squaw Valley, Placer County, California, Squaw Valley, California, United States. Egon Zimmermann
Egon Zimmermann (8 February 1939 – 23 August 2019), often referred to as Egon Zimmermann II, was a World Cup alpine ski racer and Olympic gold medalist from Austria. Zimmermann won the Olympic downhill at Patscherkofel in 1964 and won several medals on the professional tour in the late-1960s and early 1970s. Early life Zimmermann was raised on a farm near Lech, Vorarlberg, with two brothers. Lech blossomed into a ski resort while he was growing up, and his family converted their farm house into a pensione. His childhood coincided with the World War II post-war poverty of Austria, so not only did Zimmermann have no formal training, but his skis were often "fourth or fifth-hand." At 15, his father forced him to learn a trade, and he schooled in a Parisian chef program. He returned to Austria by 18 and won a clean sweep of the 1958 Junior Championships. Penny Pitou
Penelope Theresa "Penny" Pitou (born October 8, 1938) is a former United States Olympic Alpine Skiing, alpine skier, who in 1960 became the first American skier to win a medal in the Olympic downhill (ski competition), downhill event. In 2001, Pitou was inducted into the New England Women's Sports Hall of Fame. Pitou moved with her family from New York to Center Harbor, New Hampshire at the age of three. There she began skiing on a hill in her backyard, later progressing to the nearby Gilford, New Hampshire, Gilford Outing Club and Belknap Mountain (now Gunstock Mountain Resort, Gunstock) ski areas.
