Egernia
''Egernia'' is a genus of skinks (family (biology), family Scincidae) that occurs in Australia. These skinks are ecologically diverse omnivores that inhabit a wide range of habitats. However, in the loose delimitation (which incorporates about 30 species) the genus is not monophyletic but an evolutionary grade, as has long been suspected due to its lack of characteristic apomorphies. Some of the skinks traditionally placed in ''Egernia'' appear to be among the most intelligent squamates. They have been shown to be kin recognition, able to distinguish between relatives and unrelated conspecifics, and can recognize relatives individually. ''Egernia stokesii'' is a Sociality, gregarious species of lizard of the Scincidae family. Kin recognition, also called kin detection, is an organism's ability to distinguish between close genetic kin and non-kin. The Wells and Wellington affair was a dispute about the publication of three papers in the ''Australian Journal of Herpetology'' in 1983 and 1985. The periodical was established in 1981 as a peer-reviewed scientific journal focusing on the study of amphibians and reptiles (herpetology).
