Soriano Department
Soriano () is a department of Uruguay. Its capital is Mercedes. It is located on the west of the country, south of Río Negro Department, north of Colonia Department and west of Flores Department. Its western border is the Río Uruguay, separating it from Argentina. History In 1624, a Franciscan Mission established a reduction for the indigenous tribes of the area named Santo Domingo Soriano. In spite of interruptions in its existence, it is considered the earliest populated centre of the actual Uruguay. Eventually, in its place Villa Soriano was founded. The first division of Uruguay in departments happened on 27 January 1816. At the time, eight departments were formed, with Soriano being one of them. José Enrique Rodó, Uruguay
José Enrique Rodó is a small town in the Soriano Department of western Uruguay. Geography The town is located on Route 2, about northwest of Cardona and southeast of the city of Mercedes. History By the late 19th century, there existed a precarious slum called Drovandi Town, after the family surname that owned the fields. The San José-Mercedes railway was inaugurated in 1901, and along with it, the Drabble Station, named after George Drabble, a British businessman who invested in railway development in Uruguay and Argentina. By the 30s essential services were inaugurated. Between 1963 and 1996 the population increased by 40%. Mercedes () is the capital and largest city of the department of Soriano in Uruguay. According to the census 2011, it is the tenth most populated city of the country. Mercedes is an important centre of tourism, commerce and a commercial port. Its main industries are based on agriculture, dairy products, paper manufacturing and industrial activities.
