Edwin Wagensveld
Edwin Wagensveld (born 1969) is a Dutch Criticism of Islam, anti-Islam activist, convicted criminal and leader of Pegida Netherlands. He has managed to "create a spectacle generating broad media coverage" with his anti-Islam protests and Quran desecrations. Activities Wagensveld has been the leader of Pegida Netherlands since November 2014, at a time when he owned a small internet-based business selling non-lethal weapons, self-defence articles and outdoors products. He had previously that year participated in a Hogesa demonstration. He lives in Germany close to the Dutch border, and commutes to the Netherlands to stage demonstrations, and is a staunch supporter of Geert Wilders. In 2016, he was revealed to have been patrolling for refugees on the border between Bulgaria and Turkey with Tatjana Festerling. Rasmus Paludan
Rasmus Paludan (born 2 January 1982) is a Danish-Swedish politician and lawyer, who is the founder and leader of the Far-right politics, far-right Nationalism, nationalist Danish political party Stram Kurs. Paludan has become known for his extremist views, including that Islam should be banned and that immigrants of non-Western background should be deported from Denmark. He is considered by political scientists and media to be far-right and a right-wing extremist. Salwan Sabah Matthew Momika (; ; 23 June 1986 – 29 January 2025) was an Iraqi refugee and former paramilitary member of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF). While living in Sweden, he gained infamy for being an anti-Islam demonstrator who organized public demonstrations where he burnt and desecrated the Qur'an. Momika was killed on 29 January 2025 during a live broadcast on TikTok. Background Momika came from Qaraqosh, a town in the Al-Hamdaniya district in the northern Iraqi province of Nineveh. He was an ethnic Assyrian and raised as a Syriac Catholic. Before the Iraqi civil war, Momika undertook an apprenticeship in tourism and hospitality management in Baghdad. 2023 Quran Burnings In Sweden
In 2023, instances of Quran desecration, Quran-burning occurred in Sweden, which were named collectively by Swedish media as the ''Korankrisen'' ("Quran crisis"; "Quran burning crisis" in some English-language media). The most notable of them occurred on 28 June 2023, when 37-year-old Assyrians in Iraq, Iraqi Assyrian refugee Salwan Momika ripped out and set fire to pages of the Quran outside the Stockholm Mosque. This incident caused international protests and condemnation, particularly among the Muslim world. On 20 July, Momika planned another Quran burning in Stockholm, which resulted in protestors storming the Embassy of Sweden, Baghdad, Swedish embassy in Baghdad and committing arson.
