Edwin Straver
Edwin Straver (12 April 1971 – 24 January 2020) was a Dutch motorcycle racer. Career Straver was particularly known for his participation in the Dakar Rally. He participated in 2018, 2019 and 2020. In 2019 he won the classification in the class in which the driver himself must do all the maintenance on the engine; the so-called "Original by Motul". On 16 January, during the eleventh stage of the Dakar 2020 rally in Saudi Arabia, Straver crashed his motorcycle. Almkerk
Almkerk is a village in the municipality of Altena, in the Netherlands. It is located about 7 km south of Gorinchem. History The village was first mentioned in 1292 as Almekercke, and means "church on the Alm river". The Alm used to be a distributary of the Meuse. The mouth of river had been dammed before 1230 in Giessen. Almkerk developed on the river bank of the Alm. The Altena Castle was located east of the village. The ''polder'' mill Oude Doornse Molen was built around 1700. The wind mill was in service until 1965. In 1940 and 1944, the ''polder'' was inundated by the Dutch and German armies respectively, and Oude Doornse Molen later removed the water again. The mill also removed the water after the North Sea flood of 1953. Almkerk was home to 320 people in 1840. In 1879, Almkerk absorbed the former municipality of Emmikhoven. Enduro is a form of motorcycle sport run on extended cross-country, off-road courses. Enduro consists of many different obstacles and challenges. The main type of enduro event, and the format to which the World Enduro Championship is run, is a time-card enduro, whereby a number of stages are raced in a time trial against the clock. Time-keeping enduros In a traditional time-keeping enduro, riders leave together in groups or rows, and each row starts at a certain minute. The object of the event is to arrive at pre-defined checkpoints according to a strict schedule. Early or late arrivals result in the riders' scores being penalized. Dakar Rally
The Dakar Rally (or simply "The Dakar"; formerly known as the "Paris–Dakar Rally") is an annual rally raid organised by the Amaury Sport Organisation. Most events since the inception in 1978 were staged from Paris, France, to Dakar, Senegal, but due to security threats in Mauritania, which led to the cancellation of the 2008 rally, events from 2009 to 2019 were held in South America. Since 2020, the rally has been held in Saudi Arabia. The event is open to amateur and professional entries, amateurs typically making up about eighty percent of the participants. The rally is an off-road endurance event.
