Edwin Rich (historian)
Edwin Ernest Rich (4 August 1904 – 7 July 1979) was a 20th-century historian. Education Rich was born in Bristol. He was educated at Colston's School and Selwyn College, Cambridge. He was fellow of St Catharine's College, Cambridge, from 1930 to 1957; Proctor of Cambridge University in 1939; Vere Harmsworth Professor of Imperial and Naval History from 1951 to 1970; and Master of St Catharine's College, Cambridge from 1957 to 1973. Vere Harmsworth Professor Of Imperial And Naval History
The Vere Harmsworth Professorship of Imperial and Naval History is one of the senior List of Professorships at the University of Cambridge, professorships in history at the University of Cambridge. After the Beit Professor of Commonwealth History, Beit Professorship of Colonial History at University of Oxford, Oxford (founded in 1905) and the Rhodes Professor of Imperial History, Rhodes Professorship of Imperial History at King's College London (founded in 1919), it is the third oldest chair in its subject in the world. In 1919 Harold Harmsworth, 1st Viscount Rothermere endowed a "Professorship of Naval History" at Cambridge with a donation of £20,000, in memory of his son Vere who was killed at the Battle of Ancre in November 1916.
