Edwin George
Edwin George (1934 - June 30, 2022) was a Cherokee folk artist and muralist. Personal life George was born and raised in Cherokee, North Carolina, in a home that spoke only Cherokee language, Cherokee. He was a member of the sovereign nation of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. He married author Elly-Kree McKay George, and he was the step-grandfather of ceramic sculptor Janis Mars Wunderlich. Career George worked as a custodian at Kent State University from 1983 to 1998. He began painting in 1991, and took it up full time upon his retirement. He was also sought after as one of the few speakers of the Cherokee language. Cherokee, North Carolina
Cherokee () is a census-designated place (CDP) in Swain and Jackson counties in Western North Carolina, United States, within the Qualla Boundary land trust. Cherokee is located in the Oconaluftee River Valley around the intersection of U.S. Routes 19 and 441. As of the 2020 census, the CDP had a population of 2,195. It is the capital of the federally recognized Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, one of three recognized Cherokee tribes and the only one in North Carolina. The community also serves as a tourist destination, with numerous campgrounds, motels, and hotels serving visitors to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, with a major entrance to the park lying within the community. The Cherokee Historical Association runs the Oconaluftee Indian Village, a living-history museum, as well as the popular outdoor drama '' Unto These Hills'', and is associated with the Museum of the Cherokee People. ''Ethnologue'' states that there were 1,520 Cherokee speakers out of 376,000 Cherokees in 2018, while a tally by the three Cherokee tribes in 2019 recorded about 2,100 speakers. The number of speakers is in decline. The ''Tahlequah Daily Press'' reported in 2019 that most speakers are elderly, about eight fluent speakers die each month, and that only five people under the age of 50 are fluent. Eastern Band Of Cherokee Indians
The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI), (Cherokee language, Cherokee: ᏣᎳᎩᏱ ᏕᏣᏓᏂᎸᎩ, ''Tsalagiyi Detsadanilvgi'') is a List of federally recognized tribes in the contiguous United States, federally recognized Indian Tribe, Indian tribe based in western North Carolina in the United States. They are descended from the small group of 800–1,000 Cherokees who remained in the Eastern United States after the U.S. military, under the Indian Removal Act, moved the other 15,000 Cherokees to west of the Mississippi River in the late 1830s, to Indian Territory. Those Cherokees remaining in the east were to give up tribal Cherokee citizenship and to assimilate. They became U.S. citizens but in the 20th century also recovered tribal rights. The history of the Eastern Band closely follows that of the Qualla Boundary, a land trust made up of an area of their original territory. Janis Mars Wunderlich
Janis Mars Wunderlich (born 1970) is a ceramic artist, currently an assistant professor of art at Monmouth College. Wunderlich was born in Akron, Ohio and received a BFA from Brigham Young University and an MFA from Ohio State University. As she raised five children, Wunderlich established an art career both in the gallery and as a professor. As of 2020, she is an assistant professor of art history, ceramics, and art foundations at Monmouth College in Monmouth, Illinois. Art Wunderlich's preferred mediums are clay and printmaking. Her work is a distinctive mix of styles and themes and a special emphasis on motherhood. She has been the recipient of fellowships from the Ohio Arts Council and the Greater Columbus Arts Council. She spent a summer in Dresden, Germany on a residency studying modern and historic techniques of porcelain figurine manufacturing at the Meissen Factory in Meissen, Germany. Harrah's Cherokee Casino Resort is a casino and hotel on the Qualla Boundary in Cherokee, North Carolina. It is owned by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) and operated by Caesars Entertainment. It is located on the site of the former Frontier Land theme park. History Proposed in 1994, soon after a compact between the State of North Carolina and the EBCI to establish a casino with Class III gaming, Harrah's Cherokee Casino was opened on November 13, 1997.
