Edwin Benson
Edwin James Benson (; ''Ma-doke-wa-des-she'', modern Mandan orthography: ''Wéroke Wáatashe'', Iron Bison) was a Native American educator and the last native speaker of the Mandan language. He was born in Elbowoods, North Dakota, on the Fort Berthold Reservation in McLean County, North Dakota. When the Garrison Dam was built, Benson and his family were relocated to Twin Buttes, North Dakota. He taught Mandan at Twin Buttes Elementary School, and was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of North Dakota The University of North Dakota (also known as UND or North Dakota) is a public research university in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Mandan Language
Mandan (Mandan: ''Nų́ų́ʔetaa íroo'') is an extinct Siouan language of North Dakota in the United States. Use and revitalization efforts By 2009, there was just one fluent speaker of Mandan, Dr. Edwin Benson (1931–2016). The language is being taught in local school programs to encourage the use of the language. Prior to Benson's death, Estonian linguist Indrek Park worked with him for more than two years to preserve the language as much as possible. The 2020 documentary ''To Save A Language'' portrays Park's efforts to revive the language. Mandan is taught at Fort Berthold Community College along with the Hidatsa and Arikara languages. Linguist Mauricio Mixco of the University of Utah has been involved in fieldwork with remaining speakers since 1993.
