The Edwards Professor of Medieval History is a prestigious professorship at the University of Glasgow, in Scotland. Edward Lionel Gregory Stones, Fellow of the British Academy, FBA (1914–1987) was Edwards Professor of Medieval History at the University of Glasgow from 1956 to 1978. Early life and education Stones was born in Croydon. He was educated at the High School of Glasgow and studied English Language and Literature at the University of Glasgow from where he graduated with an MA with first class honours. Alfred Lawson Brown
Alfred Lawson Brown (1927 – 28 August 2006) was titular professor of medieval history at the University of Glasgow from 1973 to 1978. In the latter year he succeeded Lionel Stones as the Edwards Professor of Medieval History. Brown was a specialist in English government of the 14th and 15th centuries. Julia Mary Howard Smith, (born 29 May 1956) is an English medievalist who is the Chichele Professor of Medieval History at All Souls College, Oxford. She was formerly Edwards Professor of Medieval History at the University of Glasgow. Early life and education Smith was born on 29 May 1956 in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England. She was educated at South Hampstead High School, an all-girls Private school in London. She studied at Newnham College, Cambridge, from 1975 to 1978, followed by postgraduate study at Corpus Christi College, Oxford, from 1978 to 1981. Her doctoral supervisor was J. M. Wallace-Hadrill, one of Smith's predecessors in the Chichele chair. The Chair of Scottish History and Literature at the University of Glasgow was founded in 1913, endowed by a grant from the receipts of the 1911 Scottish Exhibition held in Glasgow's Kelvingrove Park, as well as donations from the Merchants House of Glasgow and other donors. The chair has been held by a number of prominent historians of Scotland, including two Historiographers Royal. Although the chair is now based within the Department of History, it retains its original title. History The inaugural holder of the chair was Robert Rait, appointed in 1913, a graduate of King's College, Aberdeen (now the University of Aberdeen) and tutor at New College, Oxford. In this role he sought to engage more closely with students than was traditional for academics at the time, inviting students to tea at his home.
