Edward River Council
The Edward River Council is a local government area in the Murray region of New South Wales, Australia. This area was formed in 2016 from the merger of the Deniliquin Council with the surrounding Conargo Shire. The combined area covers the urban area of Deniliquin and the surrounding region to the north and west across the pastoral southern Riverina plains. The inaugural mayor of the Edward River Council is Norm Brennan, elected by the councillors on 20 September 2017. Main towns and villages In addition to the main centre of Deniliquin, localities in the area include Blighty, Booroorban, Conargo, Mayrung, Morago, Pretty Pine and Wanganella. Conargo is a town in the Riverina region of New South Wales, Australia. The town is in the Edward River Council local government area. It is on Billabong Creek, a tributary of the Edward River. The nearest towns are Jerilderie and Deniliquin, New South Wales, Deniliquin. At the Census in Australia#2006, 2006 census, Conargo had a population of 117 people. The Aboriginal name for the locality of Conargo was 'Gooriara', meaning "hopping" or "kangaroo ground". 2021 New South Wales Local Elections
The 2021 New South Wales local elections were held on 4 December 2021 to elect the councils of 121 of the 128 local government areas (LGAs) in New South Wales. Several councils also held mayoral elections and/or referendums. Previous referendums took three net councillors in three LGAS: Cabonne, Coonamble and Dungog. The Liberal Party did not run in Kiama, North Sydney or Shoalhaven, however a number of party members chose to contest as independents. Background Following the 2012 elections, the ''Local Government (Areas) Act 1948'' was introduced, leading to the amalgamations and mergers of a number of councils. Pretty Pine is a community in the central part of the Riverina and situated about 17 kilometres south of Wanganella and 18 kilometres north-west of Deniliquin. History The Pretty Pine Hotel In September 1875 it was reported that a new hotel was being constructed for Robert Holloway at 'Pretty Pine', on the road between Deniliquin and Wanganella. Pretty Pine was a locality north-west of Deniliquin, at the junction of the Moulamein and Wanganella roads, named after "a very handsome specimen of what is commonly known here as the colonial pine" at the location.
