Edward N. Ament
Edward Newton Ament (1860–1949) was Mayor of Berkeley, California, United States from 1932 to 1939. Ament was born in Arcata, California Arcata (; ; ) is a city adjacent to the Arcata Bay (northern) portion of Humboldt Bay (United States), Humboldt Bay in Humboldt County, California, United States. At the 2010 United States Census, 2020 census, Arcata's population was 18,857. A ... July 30, 1860. In 1889, he married Florence Moody. They had one daughter. Ament was the proprietor of the Ashby Furniture Company in Berkeley. Before being becoming mayor, he served as president of the library board which oversaw the construction of the Berkeley Public Library. He was appointed to the Berkeley City Council in May 1932 upon the resignation of Agnes Moody, and became Mayor in December of the same year. He died of heart failure on February 25, 1949, in Berkeley while sitting in his dentist's waiting room. He was interred at the Sunset View Cemetery in nearby El Cerrito. Refer ... The Berkeley Public Library is the public library system for Berkeley, California. It consists of the Central Library, Claremont Branch, North Branch, West Branch, Tarea Hall Pittman South Branch, and the Tool Lending Library, which is one of the nation's first such libraries. History The Berkeley Public Library opened in 1893 on Shattuck Avenue with 264 books. In 1905, the library moved to a new brick building on Shattuck Avenue at 2090 Kittredge Street. The new library was funded by Andrew Carnegie and built on land donated by Rosa M. Shattuck, the widow of Francis K. Shattuck. Immediately following the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and the resulting population surge from across the San Francisco Bay, the library opened four other branches around Berkeley.
