Edward L. Athey
Edward L. Athey (October 26, 1921 – February 28, 2010) was a sports coach and athletic director at Washington College. His name was enshrined in the school's Hall of Fame on October 15, 1982. Athey was born in Moundsville, West Virginia but grew up and went to high school in Cumberland, Maryland. He died in Chestertown, Maryland, the home of Washington College. Playing career, education, and military service Athey was a three-sport athlete while he attended Washington College, having roles as the quarterback on the football team, a guard on the basketball team, and also an outfielder for the school's baseball team. The fall of 1942 going into the spring of 1943 was a very successful time for Athey as he was a member of the soccer, basketball, and baseball teams for the Shoremen. Coach (sports)
A sports coach is a person coaching in sport, involved in the direction, instruction and training of a sports team or athlete. History The original sense of the word ''coach'' is that of a horse-drawn carriage, deriving ultimately from the Hungarian city of Kocs where such vehicles were first made. Students at the University of Oxford in the early nineteenth century used the slang word to refer to a private tutor who would drive a less able student through his examinations just like horse driving. Britain took the lead in upgrading the status of sports in the 19th century. For sports to become professionalized, "coacher" had to become established. It gradually professionalized in the Victorian era and the role was well established by 1914. Press Box
The press box is a special section of a sports stadium or arena that is set up for the media to report about a given event. It is typically located in the section of the stadium holding the luxury box and can be either enclosed or open to the elements. In general, newspaper writers sit in this box and write about the on-field event as it unfolds. Television and radio announcers broadcast from the press box as well. Finally, in gridiron football, some coaches (especially offensive coordinators) prefer to work from the press box instead of from the sideline in order to have an "all 22" view of both the offensive and defensive players, along with coaching personnel ordered to by physicians due to medical conditions, or injuries which require rehabilitation and prevent them from being on the sidelines due to risk of further injury.
