Edward E. Hartwick Memorial Building
The Edward E. Hartwick Memorial Building is a museum building located on Hartwick Pines Road in Grayling Charter Township, Michigan, in the Hartwick Pines State Park. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. History In 1927, Mrs. Karen Hartwick donated the land that is now the Hartwick Pines State Park to the Michigan Department of Conservation. In 1929, the Department erected this building as a memorial to Mrs. Hartwick's husband, Major Edward Hartwick, who died in action during World War I. The building was probably designed by Ralph B. Herrick of the architectural firm of Herrick and Simpson. Some additional structures were constructed in the park, including a residence, barn, small campground, and a parking area. Grayling Charter Township is a charter township of Crawford County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 5,642 as of the 2020 census, down from 5,827 at the 2010 census. The city of Grayling is surrounded by Grayling Charter Township, but both are administered autonomously. Hartwick Pines State Park
Hartwick Pines State Park is a public recreation area covering in Crawford County near Grayling and Interstate 75 on the Lower Peninsula of the U.S. state of Michigan. The state park contains an old-growth forest of white pines and red pines, known as the Hartwick Pines. It is claimed by the Michigan Department of Natural resources that this old growth area, along with the Red Pine Natural Area Preserve in Roscommon County resembles the appearance of all Northern Michigan prior to the logging era. These areas do, however, lack the reoccurring low intensity fires which once occurred throughout northern Michigan, impacting regeneration of red pine and eastern hemlock, as well as leading to an increased content of hardwood species such as sugar maple and beech. Edward Hartwick
Edward Edgar Hartwick (September 6, 1871 – March 31, 1918) was an American soldier, businessman and namesake of Hartwick Pines State Park in the state of Michigan. Family Hartwick was born in St. Louis, Michigan, on September 6, 1871, to Michael Shoat and Jane Augusta (Obear) Hartwick. Among his ancestors was a brother of John Christopher Hartwick, a Lutheran minister who emigrated to the United States from Germany in the early decades of the 18th century. Hartwick, New York, and Hartwick Seminary, now Hartwick College, were named after him. Military career Hartwick's family moved to Michigan and he graduated from Grayling High School in 1888. A year later, in September 1889, Hartwick left Michigan to enroll at the United States Military Academy at West Point. He graduated with high honors in 1893. Civilian Conservation Corps
The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was a voluntary government unemployment, work relief program that ran from 1933 to 1942 in the United States for unemployed, unmarried men ages 18–25 and eventually expanded to ages 17–28. The CCC was a major part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal that supplied manual labor jobs related to the conservation and development of natural resources in rural lands owned by federal, state, and local governments. The CCC was designed to supply jobs for young men and to relieve families who had difficulty finding jobs during the Great Depression in the United States. There was eventually a smaller counterpart program for unemployed women called the She-She-She Camps, which were championed by Eleanor Roosevelt.
