Edward E. Brodie
Edward Everett Brodie (1876–1939) was an American diplomat and newspaper executive. He was a non-career appointee as American Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Thailand (January 31, 1922 – May 2, 1925) and Minister to Finland (May 16, 1930 – September 21, 1933). He headed the Oregon State Editorial Association and the National Editorial Association. Brodie was the publisher of the Oregon City ''Enterprise.'' Brodie bought the paper on February 7, 1908, and remained publisher until January 1, 1935. In 1935 Brodie joined the San Francisco advertising agency Bowman, Deute, Cummings, Inc. as head of operations, and worked there for three years. He briefly attended the University of Oregon. He was married Imogen Harding Brodie on July 17, 1905. As a result of the Bolshevist October Revolution in Russia, Finland declared its independence on December 6, 1917. On December 22 (January 4, 1918 N. S.), the highest Soviet executive body approved a decree recognizing Finland's independence. The United States recognized Finland as an independent state on May 7, 1919. A U.S. legation was established in Helsinki and the first envoy, Alexander R. Magruder, presented his credentials as ''Chargé d'Affaires'' to the government of Finland on March 19, 1920. Imogen Harding Brodie (June 8, 1878 – August 16, 1956) was an American vocal teacher and contralto soloist; she was the wife of the American envoy to the court of King Rama VI of Siam. Early life Imogen Harding Brodie was born on June 8, 1878, the daughter of George A. and Jennie B. Harding. She was the great-granddaughter of Samuel K. Barlow. Brodie's great-grandmother was Susanna Lee of South Carolina, whose father, William Lee, was a lieutenant of artillery in the Revolutionary war. Career Brodie was active in civic affairs. She was a vocal teacher until 1915. For many years she was a contralto soloist in various Portland churches.
