Edward Clere (MP)
Edward Clere (1536–1606) was an English landowner and politician, serving as Member of Parliament for Thetford and Grampound. He was a son of John Clere of Ormesby. He was educated at the University of Louvain, Cambridge, and the Inner Temple. One of his older brothers died at Florence, and the other was killed at the battle of Pinkie in 1547. His father was killed fighting at Kirkwall in 1557. Clere inherited the manor of Blicking from Sir James Boleyn. Edward Clere entertained Elizabeth at his house at the former St. George's Priory, Thetford, during her Norfolk progress in 1578. Clere wrote a description of the entertainment given to Elizabeth I at New Hall in September 1579 by the Earl of Sussex. She was greeted by a theatrical entertainment presenting Jupiter and a thunderstorm. The next day there was jousting. Thetford (UK Parliament Constituency)
Thetford was a constituency of the British House of Commons. It elected two Members of Parliament (MPs) by the bloc vote system of election. It was disenfranchised under the Representation of the People (Scotland) Act 1868, which had resulted in a net increase of seven seats in Scotland, offset by the disenfranchisement of seven English Boroughs. Bassingbourne Gawdy (died 1590)
Bassingbourne Gawdy (d. 20 January 1590), of West Harling, Norfolk, was an English landowner, magistrate and Member of Parliament (MP). Gawdy was the second son of Thomas Gawdy (d.1556) of Shotesham and Redenhall, Norfolk, by his father's first wife, Anne, daughter and coheiress of John Bassingbourne of Woodhall, Hatfield, Hertfordshire. He was educated at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, matriculating in 1545, and trained in the law at the Inner Temple. Gawdy was appointed a Justice of the Peace for Suffolk from about 1573 and for Norfolk from around 1583, and was High Sheriff of Norfolk for 1578–1579.J.H., "Gawdy, Bassingbourne I (d.1590), of West Harling, Norf.", in P.W. Sir Henry Hobart, 1st Baronet
Sir Henry Hobart, 1st Baronet (1 January 1560 – 29 December 1625), of Blickling Hall, was an English politician who succeeded Sir Edward Coke to become Chief Justice of the Court of Common Pleas. Background and education The son of Thomas Hobart and Audrey Hare, and great-grandson of Sir James Hobart of Monks Eleigh, Suffolk, who served as Attorney General during the reign of King Henry VII. He would further this lineal occupation and was admitted to Lincoln's Inn on 10 August 1575, and was later called to the Bar in 1584, and subsequently became governor of Lincoln's Inn in 1591. He was the stepson of Sir Edward Warner (1511–1565), Lieutenant of the Tower of London, and William Blennerhassett. Baconsthorpe Castle
Baconsthorpe Castle, historically known as Baconsthorpe Hall, is a ruined, fortified manor house near the village of Baconsthorpe, Norfolk, England. It was established in the 15th century on the site of a former manor hall, probably by John Heydon (died 1479), John Heydon I and his father, William. John was an ambitious lawyer with many enemies and built a tall, fortified house, but his descendants became wealthy sheep farmers, and being less worried about attack, developed the property into a more elegant, courtyard house, complete with a nearby Deer park (England), deer park.
