Education In Bosnia And Herzegovina
Education in Bosnia and Herzegovina has a long history, the first classifiable higher-education institution having been established a school of Sufism, Sufi philosophy by Gazi Husrev-beg in 1531, with numerous other religious schools following suit over time. In 1887, under de facto Austro-Hungarian Empire control, a Sharia, Sharia Law School began a five-year program. In the 1940s the University of Sarajevo became the city's first secular higher education institute. In the 1950s post-bachelaurate graduate degrees became available. Severely damaged during the war, it was recently rebuilt in partnership with more than 40 other universities. Two Schools Under One Roof
Two schools under one roof is a term for schools in Bosnia and Herzegovina based on the ethnic segregation of children on the pretext of speaking different languages. Children from two ethnic groups, Bosniaks and Croats, attend classes in the same building, but physically separated from each other and taught separate curricula. Children from one ethnic group enter the school through one door, while children from other ethnic group through another. In the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, 57 schools operated in this way in the year 2010. Students have been protesting against the segregation for years, warning that it increases inter-ethnic hatred. By 2018, 56 such schools remained. This phenomenon of ethnic separation is attributed to the Croat–Bosniak War (1992–1994) and the creation of Herzeg-Bosnia on the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina. European Credit Transfer And Accumulation System
The European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) is a standard means for comparing academic credits, i.e., the "volume of learning based on the defined learning outcomes and their associated workload" for higher education across the European Union and other collaborating European countries. For successfully completed studies, ECTS credits are awarded. One academic year corresponds to 60 ECTS credits that are normally equivalent to 1500–1800 hours of total workload, irrespective of standard or qualification type. ECTS credits are used to facilitate transfer and progression throughout the Union. The American University in Bosnia and Herzegovina (''abbr''. AUBiH) was a private university located in Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzegovina. In 2021, the State Investigation and Protection Agency raided the university, arresting the founder and owner Denis Prcić on suspicion of issuing diplomas illegally. American University ceased operating following the investigation into Prcić. The University of Bihać ( Bosnian: ''Univerzitet u Bihaću'') is a public university located in Bihać, Bosnia and Herzegovina. It was established on 28 July 1997. History The origins of higher education in this region go back to en earlier date. In 1970, an office of the College of Engineering of Karlovac started its work here, and the Department of Engineering at the College of Engineering in Bihać was established in 1975.
