Edna Alexander (singer)
Edna Alexander was a Canadian-born soprano based in the United States and later Europe. She sang with various theater companies in the United States, including the Afro-American Opera Company, Cole & Johnson, and Williams and Walker Co. Biography Alexander was born in Woodstock, Ontario, Canada, the daughter of George Alexander. When she was young, her family moved to Toledo, Ohio and then Chicago, Illinois. She started out singing as a child in the Quinn Chapel choir in Chicago, and later sang in the choir at Bethel Church. In 1895 she moved to the East Coast, where she performed as a singer. In 1896 she was part of the Afro-American Opera Company. She was the lead soprano in Cole & Johnson's "A Trip to Coontown", and also performed for the Williams & Walker Company. In 1905, she traveled to Europe as part of a performance, and continued to live there until the end of her life. While abroad, she married "Billy" Farrell who worked in variety shows. Edna Alexander (composer)
Edna Belle Alexander (1892–1972) was an American soprano singer and music composer. In addition to performing, she became a songwriter and published music under the name Alex Belledna. Biography Alexander was born in Ottumwa, Iowa on March 19, 1892 to parents Mary Ann (née Hamilton) (1868–1916) and Price Alexander. Edna had eight siblings, including four sisters and four brothers, named James Leonard, Archie A., Mary Colleen Jones, Harriet Louise, Leland Russell, Harold Creighton, Ida Helen, and Doris Elaine. Her brother, Archie Alexander, later became governor of the Virgin Islands. She attended North Des Moines High School, graduating in 1911. While living in Des Moines, Iowa, she was a member of the Des Moines Negro Lyceum and sang at various local events. In November 1911, she married William Beach at her parents' home in Highland Park, Iowa. A Trip to Coontown is an American musical comedy. It was performed, directed, and produced by African-Americans. It was written and performed in by Bob Cole and Billy Johnson. and debuted it New Jersey in 1897 before touring in the U.S. and internationally. Its New York City debut was at the Third Avenue Theatre on April 4, 1898. The musical was a reworking of Cole and Johnson's skit "At Jolly Coon-ey Island" which was written by Cole for an operatic variety company called Black Patti’s Troubadours (formed by Sissieretta Jones). ''A Trip to Coontown'' spoofed the popular musical ''A Trip to Chinatown'' (1891). In the early 20th century the musical was staged in European cities.
