Edmund C. Stanton
Edmund Courtland Stanton (5 August 1854 – 20 January 1901) was an American opera and theatre manager. Born into an affluent household, Stanton's family had ties to New York high society. He began his professional life in the insurance field in Manhattan during which time he became close friends with the Vanderbilt family who played a leading role in the establishment of the Metropolitan Opera ("the Met"). From 1883 to 1884 he served as the Secretary of the Board of the Met, and had an instrumental role in raising funds to complete the building of the Metropolitan Opera House (39th Street), Metropolitan Opera House. After the sudden death of the Met's general director Leopold Damrosch in 1885, Stanton was named as his successor, serving in that capacity from 1885 to 1891. William Henry Vanderbilt (May 8, 1821 – December 8, 1885) was an American businessman Known as "Billy", he was the eldest son of Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt, an heir to his fortune and a prominent member of the Vanderbilt family. Marianne Brandt (contralto)
Marianne Brandt (12 September 1842 – 9 July 1921) was an Austrian operatic singer with an international reputation. She was born as Marie Bischof in Vienna and was educated at the music conservatory in that city, then studied with Pauline Viardot-García. She first attracted attention on stage in 1867 as Rachel in ''La Juive'' and soon afterward accepted an engagement at the Graz opera. From 1868 to 1886, she was associated with the Royal Opera in Berlin. Brandt travelled to New York during the 1880s, where she sang for several seasons (1884–1888) the principal contralto rôles at the Metropolitan Opera House under Anton Seidl's baton. Two other leading Germanic singers, the soprano Lilli Lehmann and the bass-baritone Emil Fischer, were performing at the Met at the same time as Brandt. Andreas Dippel
Andreas Dippel (30 November 1866 – 12 May 1932) was a German-born operatic tenor and impresario who from 1908 to 1910 was the joint manager (with Giulio Gatti-Casazza) of the New York Metropolitan Opera. Biography Born Johann Andreas Dippel in Kassel, Grand Duchy of Hesse. He initially trained for a banking career there, but also studied singing. He made his stage debut in 1887 at the Bremen Stadttheater as Lionel in Flotow's opera ''Martha'' and continued to study singing with Julius Hey (Berlin), Alberto Leoni (Milan) and Johann Ress (Vienna). Max Alvary
Max Alvary (3 May 1856 – 7 November 1898), born as Maximilian Achenbach, was a German operatic tenor. Born in Düsseldorf, Germany, he was the son of the painter Andreas Achenbach, over whose initial objections he pursued his singing career. He studied in Frankfurt with Julius Stockhausen, and in Milan with Francesco Lamperti. He had a fine dramatic voice and a handsome stage presence, and speedily made a reputation in Germany in the leading roles in Richard Wagner, Wagnerian opera. Walter Damrosch
Walter Johannes Damrosch (January 30, 1862December 22, 1950) was a Prussian-born American conductor and composer. He was the director of the New York Symphony Orchestra and conducted the world premiere performances of various works, including Aaron Copland's Symphony for Organ and Orchestra, George Gershwin's Piano Concerto in F and ''An American in Paris'', and Jean Sibelius' ''Tapiola''. Damrosch was also instrumental in the founding of Carnegie Hall. He also conducted the first performance of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3 with the composer himself as soloist. Anton Seidl (7 May 185028 March 1898) was a Hungarian conductor, best known for his collaboration with Richard Wagner and conducting his operas, and for his association with the Metropolitan Opera in New York City and the New York Philharmonic. Biography He was born in Pest, Austria-Hungary, where he began the study of music at a very early age. When only seven years old, he could pick out at the piano melodies which he had heard in the theatre. At 15, he became a student of harmony and counterpoint under Nicolitsch. The ''Musical Courier'' was a weekly 19th- and 20th-century American music trade magazine that began publication in 1880. The publication included editorials, obituaries, announcements, scholarly articles and investigatory writing about musical instruments and music in general. These included construction practices, descriptions, tools, exhibitions collections, new technologies, and laws and legal actions relating to the music industry. ''Tannhäuser'' (; full title , "Tannhäuser and the Minnesängers' Contest at Wartburg") is an 1845 opera in three acts, with music and text by Richard Wagner ( WWV 70 in the catalogue of the composer's works). Oratorio Society Of New York
The Oratorio Society of New York is a not-for-profit membership organization that performs choral music in the oratorio style. Founded in 1873 by conductor Leopold Damrosch, it is the third oldest musical organization in New York City. The Society had a prominent role in the building of Carnegie Hall. Throughout its history, it has premiered many new choral works. Kent Tritle was appointed as the Society's 11th music director in January 2006, succeeding Lyndon Woodside.
