Edmond Racle
Edmond Racle (born 30 September 1880) was a Swiss footballer who played as striker and as midfielder during the late 1890s and the early 1900s. Football career FC Basel was founded on 15 November 1893 and Racle joined the club about five years later, during their 1898–99 season. During his first season with the club Racle did not play in any first team games. Racle played his first game for the club in the first game of the following season. This was a home game at the Landhof on 8 October 1899, but Basel were defeated 0–4 by FC Fortuna Zürich. During the 1899–1900 season Racle played only three of the teams 16 friendly games. Basel did not compete in the Swiss championship this season. A midfielder is an outfield position in association football. Midfielders may play an exclusively defensive role, breaking up attacks, and are in that case known as defensive midfielders. As central midfielders often go across boundaries, with mobility and passing ability, they are often referred to as deep-lying midfielders, play-makers, box-to-box midfielders, or holding midfielders. 1898–99 FC Basel Season
The FC Basel 1898–99 season was their sixth season since the club's foundation on 15 November 1893. This was the first season in which they competed for the Swiss championship. The club's chairman was Charlie Volderauer, who was chairman between 1896 and 1900. He was the third chairman in the club's history, following Roland Geldner (1893–1896) and Emanuel Schiess (1896). FC Basel played their home games in the Landhof, in the Quarter Kleinbasel. Overview In the early years of the Basel first team the club did not have a trainer or coach. Landhof
The Landhof was a sports stadium in the district Basel-Wettstein in Kleinbasel, Basel. It was the former and first home stadium of FC Basel. It is mentioned for the first time in a chronicle in the second half of the 18th century as a ''nice summer house with beautiful property''. The best known owner of the manor was , a member of the Merian family. He was Mayor of Basel and Landammann of Switzerland (highest office at the time). In 1892 the granddaughter of Merian-Iselin sold the Landhof to a certain Katharina Ehrler-Wittich. As the Football Club Basel 1893 was founded in 1893 and look for a ground to play, she made the Landhof available free of charge as a playing surface. The FC Basel 1900–01 season was their eighth season since the club's foundation on 15 November 1893. The club's new chairman was Ernst-Alfred Thalmann, who took over the presidency from Charlie Volderauer at the AGM. He was the fourth chairman in the club's history. The 1900–01 Swiss Serie A season was the 1900–01 season of the Swiss national football league championship. Overview The 1900–01 Swiss Serie A was divided into two groups, an east and a west group. The east group had three teams from Zürich, Grasshopper Club Zürich, FC Zürich, Fire Flies Zürich and three teams from Basel, FC Basel, Old Boys and Fortuna Basel. There were four teams in the west group, FC La Chaux-de-Fonds, Servette Genf, FC Neuchâtel and FC Bern. From the east group the Grasshoppers qualified themselves for the finals against FC Bern who were the winners of the east group. The final was played on 31 March 1901 in Aarau, but a player from the Grasshopper Club was not-qualified and the result was voided and replayed.
