Edith E. Sproul
Edith E. Sproul, M.D. (October 17, 1907 – January 19, 1999) was an American pathologist whose work with Georgios Papanikolaou of the Cornell University Medical School in New York led to the development of the pap smear. Sproul described the relationship between thrombophlebitis and pancreatic cancer and characteristics of early prostatic cancer. Life and career Edith E. Sproul was born in 1907 in Passaic, New Jersey. She graduated from Barnard College of Columbia University in 1927, followed by Columbia's College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1931. After a two-year internship at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, New York and a residency in pathology at Presbyterian Hospital, Sproul returned to Columbia as instructor in pathology at the College of Physicians and Surgeons. She remained at Columbia for twelve years and was promoted to the position of associate professor before her departure in 1946. Barnard College
Barnard College of Columbia University is a private women's liberal arts college in the borough of Manhattan in New York City. Pancreatic Cancer
Pancreatic cancer arises when cells in the pancreas, a glandular organ behind the stomach, begin to multiply out of control and form a mass. These cancerous cells have the ability to invade other parts of the body. A number of types of pancreatic cancer are known. The most common, pancreatic adenocarcinoma, accounts for about 90% of cases, and the term "pancreatic cancer" is sometimes used to refer only to that type. These adenocarcinomas start within the part of the pancreas that makes digestive enzymes. Several other types of cancer, which collectively represent the majority of the non-adenocarcinomas, can also arise from these cells.
