Edisto Channel
Edisto Channel () is a marine channel, whose south end is filled by Edisto Ice Tongue. It extends in a northeast–southwest direction between the Taylor Islands and the northwestern islands of the Highjump Archipelago on the west, and the Bunger Hills, Thomas Island, and the remaining islands in the Highjump Archipelago on the east. Scott Glacier () is a glacier, wide and over long, flowing north-northwest to the Antarctic coast between Denman Glacier and Mill Island. It was discovered by the Western Base Party of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (1911-1914) under Mawson and named for Capt. Robert F. Scott. Highjump Archipelago
The Highjump Archipelago is a group of rocky islands, rocks and ice rises in Antarctica, about long and from wide, lying generally north of the Bunger Hills and extending from the Taylor Islands, close northwest of Cape Hordern, to a prominent group of ice rises which terminate close west of Cape Elliott. It was delineated from aerial photographs taken by U.S. Navy Operation Highjump 1946–47 and so named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names. The codeword "highjump" was used for identifying the U.S. Navy Task Force 68, 1946–47. Bunger Hills
Bunger Hills, also known as Bunger Lakes or Bunger Oasis, is a coastal range on the Knox Coast in Wilkes Land in Antarctica, consisting of a group of moderately low, rounded coastal hills, overlain by morainic drift and notably ice free throughout the year, lying south of the Highjump Archipelago. The reasoning behind the minute amount of ice in the area is still relatively unknown and remains under intense debate amongst scientists today. The Bunger Hills are located with its center at , stretching from 65°58'S to 66°20'S and from 100°20'E to 101°28'E. The Bunger Hills are marked by numerous melt ponds and are nearly bisected by an east-west trending Algae Lake (also known as Lake Figurnoye). Thomas Island () is a large Antarctic island in the Highjump Archipelago, 6 nautical miles (11 km) long and from 1 to 3 nautical miles (6 km) wide. It lies near the center of the main cluster of islands off the north flank of the Bunger Hills. Advisory Committee On Antarctic Names
The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (ACAN or US-ACAN) is an advisory committee of the United States Board on Geographic Names responsible for recommending commemorative names for features in Antarctica. History The committee was established in 1943 as the Special Committee on Antarctic Names (SCAN). It became the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names in 1947. Fred G. Alberts was Secretary of the Committee from 1949 to 1980. By 1959, a structured nomenclature was reached, allowing for further exploration, structured mapping of the region and a unique naming system. A 1990 ACAN gazeeter of Antarctica listed 16,000 names. USS Edisto (AG-89)
USS ''Edisto'' (AGB-2) was a in the service of the United States Navy and was later transferred to the United States Coast Guard as USCGC ''Edisto'' (WAGB-284). She was named after Edisto Island, South Carolina. The island is named after the Native American Edisto Band who inhabited the island and the surrounding area. As of 2011 there is a namesake cutter USCGC ''Edisto'' (WPB-1313). The newer ''Edisto'' is a 110-foot and is stationed in San Diego County, California. Operation Windmill (OpWml) was the United States Navy's Second Antarctica Developments Project, an exploration and training mission to Antarctica in 1947–1948. This operation was a follow-up to the First Antarctica Development Project known as Operation Highjump. The expedition was commanded by Commander Gerald L.
