Edinburgh Thistle F.C.
Edinburgh Thistle Football Club was a football club from the city of Edinburgh. History The club was formed in 1871, which would make Thistle the first association club in the city. The foundation date may be that of a cricket club from the Meadows from which the association football club may have been formed. By 1874 it was recognised that there were two association clubs in Edinburgh - the Thistle and the 3rd Edinburgh Rifle Volunteers F.C.; Thistle was playing matches between its members in 1873, before the 3rd E.R.V. was set up. The club was one of the four founding members of the Edinburgh Football Association, formed in September 1875, with the 3rd E.R.V., Heart of Midlothian F.C., and Hanover. All except Hanover entered the Scottish Cup for the first time in 1875–76. 1879–80 Scottish Cup
The 1879–80 Scottish Cup – officially the Scottish Football Association Challenge Cup – was the seventh season of Scotland's most prestigious football knockout competition. With 142 entrants, this season saw the largest number of teams to compete for the trophy since its inception. Three-time defending champions Vale of Leven lost their first match in the competition for four seasons when they were knocked out in the first round, losing 4–3 to rivals Dumbarton. Queen's Park regained the trophy as they won the competition for the fourth time after beating Thornliebank 3–0 in the final on 21 February 1880. Format As with the previous competitions, the seventh edition of the Scottish Cup took on the format of a traditional knockout tournament. It consists largely of open grassland crossed by tree-lined paths, but also has a children's playground, a croquet club, tennis courts and recreational sport pitches. It is bordered by the University of Edinburgh's George Square campus, the Gordon Aikman Lecture Theatre, the main university library and the Quartermile development on the site of the old Edinburgh Royal Infirmary to the north, Marchmont, Summerhall and Sciennes to the south and Newington to the east. The Scottish Junior Football Association (SJFA) is an affiliated national association of the Scottish Football Association and is the governing body for the junior grade of football (soccer), football in Scotland. The term "junior" refers to the level of football played, not the age of the players. The closest equivalent terminology would be non-League football in England, the difference being that junior football in Scotland was not similarly integrated into its Scottish football league system, football league system until 2021.
