Edgbaston Priory Club
The Edgbaston Priory Club is a private members' tennis, squash (sport), squash and leisure club in Birmingham, England. The club is the host of the annual Women's Tennis Association, WTA Tour stop, the Birmingham Classic (tennis), Rothesay Classic. The 'Ann Jones Court' stadium has a capacity of 2,500 people (1,000 permanent and 1,500 temporary). The club has a fitness suite and class studio, a bar and bistro area, indoor and outdoor pools, 30+ tennis courts and 10 squash courts. It is considered one of the premier racquets clubs in the UK. History The Edgbaston Priory was formed by the merger in 1964 of two of the earliest lawn tennis clubs, the Priory Lawn Tennis Club (founded 1875), and the Edgbaston Cricket & Lawn Tennis Club (founded 1878). Edgbaston () is a suburb of Birmingham, West Midlands (county), West Midlands, England. It lies immediately south-west of Birmingham city centre, and was historically in Warwickshire. Sir Francis Lowe, 1st Baronet
Sir Francis William Lowe, 1st Baronet (8 January 1852 – 12 November 1929) was a British Conservative Party politician. He was elected as the Member of Parliament for Edgbaston at a by-election in February 1898, and held the seat until he stood down at the 1929 general election, when he was succeeded by future UK Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain who had moved from Birmingham Ladywood. He was made a Baronet in 1918, of Edgbaston in the City of Birmingham, and was appointed as Privy Councillor in the 1929 Dissolution Honours. He was married to Mary Holden; they had four children, including his heir Francis Gordon, who was a well-known tennis player before the First World War, as was another son, Arthur. Billie Jean King (née Moffitt; born November 22, 1943), also known as BJK, is an American former World number 1 ranked female tennis players, world No. 1 tennis player. Arthur Ashe
Arthur Robert Ashe Jr. (July 10, 1943 – February 6, 1993) was an American professional tennis player. He won three Grand Slam (tennis)#Tournaments, Grand Slam titles in singles and two in doubles. Ashe was the first Black player selected to the United States Davis Cup team, and the only Black man ever to win the singles titles at Wimbledon Championships, Wimbledon, the US Open (tennis), US Open, and the Australian Open. Jonah Barrington (squash Player)
Jonah Barrington MBE (born 29 April 1941) is a retired Irish/English squash player, originally from Morwenstow, Cornwall, England. A Cornish-born Irish squash player, Barrington won the British Open (which was considered to be the effective world championship event before the World Squash Championships began) six times between 1967 and 1973, and was known as "Mr. Squash". Barrington attended Headfort School (County Meath, Ireland), Cheltenham College, and spent two years at Trinity College Dublin. The six-time British champion came from an old Anglo-Irish family. Anthony John Mottram (8 June 1920 – 6 October 2016) was a British tennis player of the 1940s and 1950s. Mottram reached the quarterfinal of the 1948 Wimbledon Championships in which he lost to Gardnar Mulloy. Dorothy Round
Dorothy Edith Round (13 July 1909 – 12 November 1982) was a British tennis player who was active from the late 1920s until 1950. She achieved her major successes in the 1930s. She won the singles title at Wimbledon Championships, Wimbledon in 1934 and 1937, and the singles at the Australian Open, Australian Championships in 1935.
