Edgard Stern
Edgard-Salomon Stern (1 January 1854 – 20 April 1937) was a French banker and art collector. Biography Stern was born in Paris, the son of Salomon Stern, a Frankfurt banker, and Johanne Ellissen, and nephew of Antoine Jacob Stern, Baron Hermann Stern and Viscount David de Stern, Edgard Stern joined Banque Stern in 1877, becoming a partner in 1888 and then head of the bank. Stern was a director of Banque de Paris et des Pays-Bas (replacing his first cousin Jacques Stern, who co-founded the bank), Compagnie des chemins de fer andalous, Banca Commerciale Italiana, Banque d'Indochine, Ateliers et Chantiers de la Loire, Compagnie Générale des Eaux, Compagnie Générale des Eaux pour l'Etranger, Compagnie Générale du Gaz pour la France et l'Etranger, Compagnie des Sels Gemmes et Houillères de la Russie Méridionale and Brufina. Édouard Stern (18 October 1954 – 28 February 2005) was a French banker who was infamously murdered in Geneva, Switzerland, by a woman he had a four-year relationship with. At the time of his death, he was the 38th richest French citizen. Biography Early life Édouard Stern was born in 1954 to one of France's wealthiest families, the owners of the private investment house Banque Stern. His father, Antoine Jean Stern, is a descendant of a notable Stern family, family of bankers, going back to 19th-century Free City of Frankfurt, Frankfurt, and his mother was Christiane Laroche, former wife of French journalist and politician Jean-Jacques Servan-Schreiber. Henry Coston (20 December 1910 – 26 July 2001) was a French far-right, anti-Semitic journalist, collaborationist and conspiracy theorist. Marguerite Stern (née Fould) (1866–1956) was a French Jewish art collector whose property was seized by Nazis during the occupation of Paris. Family life Born in 1866 into the French Jewish bourgeoisie as the daughter of Henri Fould and Suzette Stern, Fould married into the Stern banking dynasty of which her husband Edgard Stern (1854–1937) was part. Art collecting and the Nazi era During the occupation of France by Nazi Germany, the Stern and Fould families were persecuted unter antisemitic laws due to their Jewish origins.
