Edgar Jenkins
Edgar Lanier Jenkins (January 4, 1933 – January 1, 2012) was an American politician who served eight terms as the U.S. representative for Georgia's 9th congressional district from 1977 to 1993. He was a member of the Democratic Party. Biography Jenkins, who was born in Young Harris, Georgia, served in the Coast Guard from 1952 to 1955, and as administrative assistant to congressman Phillip M. Landrum from 1959 to 1962. Congress He was elected to Congress in 1976. He supported protection for the textile industry and capital gains tax cuts. In 1989, he challenged Richard Gephardt for Majority Leader but lost by a margin of 76 to 181 votes. Death He left Congress in 1993. Richard Gephardt
Richard Andrew Gephardt (; born January 31, 1941) is an American attorney, lobbyist, and politician who represented in the United States House of Representatives from 1977 to 2005. A member of the Democratic Party, he was House majority leader from 1989 to 1995 and minority leader from 1995 to 2003. He ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States in 1988 and 2004. Gephardt was mentioned as a possible vice presidential nominee in 1988, 1992, 2000, 2004, and 2008. Since his retirement from politics, Gephardt has become a lobbyist. Georgia's 9th Congressional District
Georgia's 9th congressional district is a congressional district in the north of the U.S. state of Georgia. The district is represented by Republican Andrew Clyde, who succeeded fellow Republican Doug Collins. The district is mostly rural and exurban in character, though it stretches into Hall (home to the district's largest city, Gainesville) and Gwinnett counties on Atlanta's northern fringe. The district has a heavy Republican lean. Donald Trump carried the district with almost 78 percent of the vote in 2016, his fourth-best showing in the nation. With a Cook Partisan Voting Index of R+17, it is one of the most Republican districts in Georgia. The district swung rapidly into the Republican column after then-congressman and future governor Nathan Deal switched parties in 1995.
