Eden Hills, South Australia
Eden Hills is a south eastern suburb located in the foothills of Adelaide, South Australia. It is part of the local government area of the City of Mitcham. History Whilst the derivation of the name is not conclusive, the Department of Lands Grant Book reveals the first land owner in the area was William Detmar Cook who purchased a property on 29 October 1839. Cook was Master of the barque ''Eden''. There was little settlement of the area until the early 1880s, when the railway from Adelaide to Nairne opened, being the first stage in the plan to link Adelaide to Melbourne. In 1883, a syndicate comprising John Whyte, James Cowan, Ebenezer Ward, John Hill, R. D. Moore, Seth Ferry and G. H. Catchlove acquired the sections of land where the suburb is now centred, and following a survey laid out the land into allotments. Around that time Edwin Ashby moved into the area. Eden Hills Railway Station
Eden Hills railway station is located on the Belair line. Situated in the Adelaide southern foothills suburb of Eden Hills, it is 14.2 kilometres from Adelaide station. History Eden Hills is the only station on the Adelaide Metro to have a tunnel on both approaches. The original line through Eden Hills was opened in 1883, as part of the Adelaide to Nairne railway. The Register of the National Estate was a heritage register that listed natural and cultural heritage places in Australia that was closed in 2007. Phasing out began in 2003, when the Australian National Heritage List and the Commonwealth Heritage List were created and by 2007 the Register had been replaced by these and various state and territory heritage registers. The South Australian Country Fire Service (SACFS, commonly abbreviated as CFS) is a volunteer based fire service in the Australian state of South Australia. The CFS has responsibility as the Control Agency for firefighting, rescues and Hazardous Wastes, hazardous materials and inland waterways in the country regions of South Australia. Belair Railway Line
The Belair line is a suburban rail commuter route in greater Adelaide, South Australia, that runs from the Adelaide railway station to Belair in the Adelaide Hills via the Adelaide-Wolseley line using diesel 3000/3100 class railcars. This part of the Adelaide–Wolseley line comprised two broad-gauge tracks until the Adelaide–Wolseley line was converted to standard gauge in 1995. Now two separate single-track lines run in parallel from Adelaide to Belair: the Belair commuter line – still broad gauge – and the line to Wolseley thence interstate – standard gauge – line. Blackwood High School
Blackwood High School is a co-educational secondary school located in Eden Hills, a south-eastern suburb of Adelaide, South Australia, teaching to the Australian Curriculum and the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE). It is also a special-interest high school that specialises in netball and Australian rules Football. The school developed a resource with Sturt Police on "Teenage Parties" that has been adapted by Victorian private schools Scotch College and Toorak College. The school also has a canteen (which services other local schools) and is the site of the Blackwood Community Recreation Centre. In 2022, the school has adopted a rule which bans students from using their mobile phone during school hours. William Henry Shephard
William Henry Shephard (c. 1812 – 29 June 1848) was an early colonist of South Australia. The son of a lawyer, Shephard arrived at Port Adelaide on the privately chartered ''Tam o' Shanter'' (which rather ignominiously got stuck on the mud flats) in 1836. Thomas Maslin (for whom Maslin Beach, South Australia, Maslins Beach is named) was a fellow emigrant and later his brother-in-law. He opened the "Adelaide Tavern" on Franklin Street, near the present Rosetta Terrace, with a theatre upstairs capable of holding 400 people. It was at this inn that a reception was held for Colonel Light on 6 June 1838 with 250 invited guests. He sold the Tavern in March 1839, when it became the "Adelaide and Port Lincoln Hotel", and was later that same year renamed "Allen's Hotel". He settled on his property "Windsor Farm" at Sturt Hills (possibly now Eden Hills?). He died of tuberculosis at the age of 36.
