Edakkad (State Assembly Constituency)
Edakkad was one of the 140 state legislative assembly constituencies in Kerala state in southern India, before the 2008 delimitation of constituencies. It was one of the seven state legislative assembly constituencies included in Kannur Lok Sabha constituency until the 2008 delimitation. The last election to the constituency was conducted in 2006, and the MLA was Kadannappalli Ramachandran of Congress (Secular). After the delimitation in 2008, Chelora, Edakkad, and Munderi Gram Panchayats became a part of Kannur Assembly constituency, whereas Anjarakkandy, Chembilode, Kadambur, Muzhappilangad, and Peralasseri were added to the newly formed Dharmadam Assembly constituency. Kannur District
Kannur () is one of the 14 Districts of Kerala, districts along the west coast in the state of Kerala, India. The city of Kannur is the district headquarters and gives the district its name. The old name, Cannanore, is the anglicized form of the Malayalam name "Kannur". Kannur district is bounded by Kasaragod District to the north, Kozhikode district to the south, Mahé district to the southwest and Wayanad District to the southeast. To the east, the district is bounded by the Western Ghats, which forms the border with the state of Karnataka (Kodagu district). The Arabian Sea lies to the west. N Ramakrishnan (13 March 1941 – 1 October 2012) was an Indian politician, affiliated to the Indian National Congress. He served as the state Labour Minister in the Government of Kerala from 1991 to 1995. Early life He was born at Anjarakkandy, Kannur, Kerala on 13 March 1941 to M. K. Raghavan and N. Narayani. He was the eldest of their four children. Political career Ramakrishnan's political career started as a trade unions activist among beedi workers. He organised the beedi workers under Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC). In 1967 he was elected as Youth Congress State Secretary. He was first elected to the Kerala legislative assembly in 1970 from Edakkad constituency of Kerala. 2001 Kerala Legislative Assembly Election
The 2001 Kerala Legislative Assembly election was held on 10 May 2001 to elect members to the Kerala State Assembly. Polls were held simultaneously in all 140 seats and resulted in a voter turnout of 72.47%. The election saw a change of guard in the state with the United Democratic Front winning 99 seats as opposed to the 40 won by the Left Democratic Front. The remaining seat was won by a UDF rebel candidate. This election remains to have been the last one in which the Indian National Congress was the largest party in the legislative assembly, with the Communist Party of India (Marxist) emerging as the leading party in every successive election, including in 2011, when the UDF won by a wafer-thin margin of 2 seats. Democratic Indira Congress (Karunakaran) (DIC(K)) was a political party in Kerala, India. DIC(K) was founded at a meeting in Thrissur by the Kannoth Karunakaran, K. Karunakuran faction of the Indian National Congress on 1 May 2005. Initially it was called National Congress (Indira Gandhi, Indira), but the name was changed DIC(K) for registration purposes in August of the same year. Karunakuran's son K.
