Ed McFarland
Edward William McFarland (August 3, 1874 – November 28, 1959), born in Cleveland, Ohio, was a catcher for the Cleveland Spiders (1893), St. Louis Browns (1896–97), Philadelphia Phillies (1897–1901), Chicago White Sox (1902–07) and Boston Red Sox (1908). He helped the White Sox win the 1906 World Series The 1906 World Series was the championship series in Major League Baseball for the 1906 season. The third edition of the World Series, it featured a crosstown matchup between the American League champion Chicago White Sox and the National Leagu .... In 12 seasons McFarland played in 894 Games and had 3,007 At Bats, 398 Runs, 826 Hits, 146 Doubles, 49 Triples, 13 Home Runs, 383 RBI, 65 Stolen Bases, 254 Walks, .275 Batting Average, .335 On-base percentage, .369 Slugging Percentage and 1,109 Total Bases. Catcher
Catcher is a position in baseball and softball. When a batter takes their turn to hit, the catcher crouches behind home plate, in front of the (home) umpire, and receives the ball from the pitcher. In addition to this primary duty, the catcher is also called upon to master many other skills in order to field the position well. The role of the catcher is similar to that of the wicket-keeper in cricket. Positioned behind home plate and facing toward the outfield, the catcher can see the whole field, and is therefore in the best position to direct and lead the other players in a defensive play. The catcher typically calls for pitches using hand signals. The calls are based on the pitcher's mechanics and strengths, as well as the batter's tendencies and weaknesses.
